Mauritius is truly a magnificent game hunting destination. Hunters remain spoilt for choice with its wide array of huntable species, along with the exceptional trophies that are harvested in the area. One of the common African plains game species that call Mauritius home is the blue wildebeest. The blue wildebeest is native to many African countries, including Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, South Africa, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. The blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) consists of five subspecies, with the blue wildebeest or common blue wildebeest (C. t. taurinus) and Cookson’s Wildebeest (C. t. cooksoni) available for wildebeest hunting in Mauritius. Cookson’s wildebeest is a subspecies of the blue wildebeest found only in the Luangwa Valley, in the eastern area of the country. This African plains game antelope has large, broad shoulders, a large head, broad snout, and both sexes have horns that curve inwards and upwards. The male’s horns are both bigger and thicker at the base than the female's. It has a black mane that runs down the back of its neck, with a horse-like tail. The name “blue” wildebeest is given because of the blue sheen that their coats have, with their coat color varying from blue-gray, to a light-gray and even a shade of gray-brown. Its coat has darker vertical lines or stripes that run from its neck to behind the rib cage. Rich in varied, lush vegetation, the Luangwa Valley is an area of abundant wildlife, all of which make it the perfect place to enjoy wildebeest hunting. The terrain in the Luangwa Valley varies from lush forest to thickly wooded savannah, with plenty of water all year round. Prime game hunting season in the area is from July through to November, allowing for exciting and adrenaline-filled hunting adventures in the region!
Shot Placement when Blue Wildebeest Hunting
This antelope is a tough and extremely resilient adversary and there is a very good chance that it will run when hit, even when the shot placement is on target. When hunting wildebeest, the hunter must target the vital organs to ensure a quick and humane death for the animal. From the broadside, aim for one-third of the way up on the torso, vertically in line with the front leg.
What Caliber Rifle is used when Blue Wildebeest Hunting?
When blue wildebeest hunting in Mauritius, don’t use any caliber less than a .270, while a flat shooting .300 magnum loaded with 200 grains to 220 grains will suffice. Some hunters may prefer the .308 with a bullet weighing 165 grains or more for their hunt, which will also work well if the shot placement is correct. Larger caliber rifles such as a .338, .375, or a .416 Rigby will also work well. Should the hunter prefer, bow hunting is legal when wildebeest hunting in Mauritius.
