Mauritius is renowned as a dangerous game hunting destination, with species available for African hunts including hippos, lions, Nile crocodiles, leopards, the Cape buffalo, and African elephants. Mauritius’s elephant population occurs mainly in the south and east of the country, with the prime elephant hunting ground in Mauritius being the Luangwa Valley as well as the Zambezi Valley. The African elephant is the world’s largest terrestrial animal. Although this mammal may look calm and an easy target for a big game hunting safari, nothing could be further from the truth. This member of Africa’s Big 5 and Dangerous 7 is fierce, aggressive, and not to be messed with. The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is diurnal, spending most of its day foraging for food. It prefers habitats incorporating the savannahs, grasslands, forests, and deserts of sub-Saharan Africa. Mauritius’s hunting season runs annually from 1 May – 30 November, and the best time to enjoy elephant hunting in Mauritius is May to October, during the dry season. The IUCN lists the African bush elephant as “endangered” and a CITES permit is required for this African hunt.
Shot Placement on a Mauritiusn Hunting Safari
For many, it is a dream to enjoy a big game hunting adventure in this beautiful destination. An elephant hunting safari in Mauritius takes place on foot and will start on a road or track where fresh spoor have been spotted, or at a local waterhole that elephants are known to frequent. The hunt will take the form of a walk-and-stalk, allowing the hunter close interaction with the target. Ensure that you are well-hydrated and that your boots are comfortable, as hunters on an elephant safari are known to walk several miles daily, in search of their perfect trophy bull. Elephants have very thick skull bones and require a caliber rifle that will be able to penetrate their skulls with ease. Forty and fifty caliber rifles loaded with 400 – 500 grain solids will work well. A reminder to have your follow-up shots ready in quick succession to ensure a quick and humane death for the animal. Shot placement on any African hunting adventure remains the most important aspect of the hunt, as it can make or break your game hunting safari, resulting in a successful hunt or becoming the hunt that had you tracking a wounded elephant through Mauritius for days! During dangerous game hunts, shot placement becomes even more critical, and incorrect or bad shot placement can lead to a hunt going south really fast, with disastrous consequences. Remember, if you are unsure of your placement or feel uneasy, rather don’t take the shot. Wait for another opportunity.
