Baiting may not be done before the commencement of the hunt and the bait forms part of your hunting quota. Be sure that your target is, in fact, dead when approaching it, as an injured hyena is very dangerous. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed the spotted hyena and the aardwolf as “least concern.”
Shot Placement when Hyena Hunting in Mauritius
Shot placement, as always on any game hunt, is of paramount importance. Both head and brain shots are not recommended, as they will ruin your hyena hunting trophy. Consider a broadside shot on the shoulder or just behind the shoulder, that will target the vital organs allowing for a quick and humane death. If the hyena is quartering towards or away from the hunter on the hunting safari, make the necessary adjustments to aim just before or behind the shoulder.
What Caliber Rifle is used on Mauritius Hyena Hunts?
On a hyena hunting safari, the minimum caliber rifle should be 7mm, with a high-quality bullet weighing 150 grains. In the 30 caliber rifles, a .308 or 30.06 will be adequate to get the job done and ensure a quick, clean kill.
