Limpopo is renowned as South Africa’s plains game capital, with abundant numbers and species in the region. One of these is the beautiful Sable antelope with its striking coat and impressive backward curving horns. This elusive antelope is extremely wary and alert, resulting in a challenging hunt for plains game enthusiasts in the region.
The Hunting Safari Includes:
Some popular plains game in the area includes the Greater Kudu (US$3250 – under 50”), Giraffe Bull (US$ 3,000), Common Springbok (US$ 650), Tsessebe (US$ 2,500), Nyala (US$ 2,500 – under 28 inches), Cape Eland (US$3,750), Warthog (US$ 650), and the Waterbuck (US$ 2,950).
Dean and his brother Hano are heading up this family-run business that has been around for decades. Offering luxury hunting safaris in both South Africa and Mozambique, this Outfitter offers African plains game, dangerous game, and specialty game hunting safaris in numerous concessions.
This experienced team has what it takes to deliver an unforgettable safari, great trophies, and comfortable accommodation, all culminating in a premier hunting experience.
After arrival at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you must take a short domestic flight to Polokwane Airport in Limpopo. Dean and his team will meet you there, and after a short road transfer, hunters will arrive at the Messina lodge and hunting grounds.
The lodge offers various amenities, including a swimming pool, various lounges, and a fire pit to relax around, along with breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
Apart from the main lodge, it includes 6 air-conditioned chalets, all equipped with comfortable beds and en-suite bathrooms. For those wanting to keep in touch with family and loved ones back home, WiFi and cell phone reception are available.
The resident chef is on hand to provide tasty, nutritious meals, freshly prepared, and can incorporate game meat (venison) from previous hunts.
For those hunters bringing their firearms into South Africa, a SAPS 520 Import Form needs to be completed.
A classic Sable hunting method is the spot-and-stalk approach. A face-to-face shot should typically hit the chest center where the throat and body meet, while a broadside shot should aim at the shoulder or just behind to target the vital organs.
When hunting Sable, don’t choose anything less than a .270 caliber. Thirty calibers like a 30.06, or a well-placed shot from a .308 provide more than enough kinetic energy to bring down this antelope. Bigger calibers loaded with solids, such as a .338 or .375 work extremely well. If the shots are going to be further in distance, a 7mm or 300-win mag should be considered.
Sable hunts are challenging affairs, as they are wary antelopes, always on alert, with dominant males and other members of the herd issuing alarm calls when spotting threats. This makes it extremely difficult for a hunter to approach them undetected, and this, combined with their fast reflexes, makes them a challenge to stalk and hunt. They are best targeted through spot-and-stalk or tracking, while ambush techniques near a water hole have also been successful. Sable hunting in South Africa is available throughout the year, with the Limpopo province being one of the most popular regions in the country to target this majestic animal.
South Africa is seen as one of the premier game hunting regions in Africa. But what makes this destination so popular? Firstly, it is easily accessible from anywhere worldwide, with daily international flights landing at one of the three international airports. Domestic flights are quick, offering hunters a variety of options to be able to hunt in any of the country’s nine provinces and to reach them with ease, whether by domestic flights or charter flights.
While many regions have restrictions on the hunting season, hunting takes place throughout the year in South Africa, although the peak season is the cooler months from around May to August. While many African destinations can be quite expensive when considering a hunting safari, South African hunts are seen as value for money, with outfitters seen as some of the best worldwide, and South African hospitality being legendary.
South Africa can offer hunters the best of both worlds: Whether they are interested in a big game safari featuring the Big 5, or perhaps an iconic African plains game hunt, the destination ticks all the boxes in terms of species, variety, abundance, and overall hunting experience. South Africa is also the only destination worldwide, apart from Namibia, where all members of Africa’s Big 5 can be hunted (With this being said, no Leopard permits have been issued in quite some time).
Lastly, when all is said and done, the last bullet is shot and the trophies are in the salt, this diverse destination offers travelers great family getaways and holidays, allowing hunters to easily travel with family and other non-hunting parties.
