    Game Hunting Guenter’s Dik-Dik

    Game Hunting Guenter’s Dik-Dik

    Günther's Dik-Dik is a Popular Pygme Antelope

Guenther’s dik-diks (Madoqua guentheri) are found in East Africa including regions of Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda. They prefer habitats that include low thicket-type vegetation, grasslands and riverine woodlands. These members of the Tiny 10 are monogamous and bond for life. The female is the dominant of the pair and leads them as they search for food or rest areas. They are shy, alert animals that are more active at dawn and dusk. Their conservation status is “least concern” and can be hunted in both Ethiopia as well as Uganda.

Guenter’s dik-diks are herbivores and their diet includes leaves, flowers, fruits and shoots. Being so tiny, these pygme antelopes don’t consume a lot of food, but they are picky eaters, choosing only the freshest and best parts of the plant. They consume many water-rich foods, ensuring that they can survive in harsh, arid regions without much water.

Females can give birth up to twice a year, after a gestation period of 170-180 days. They usually give birth to one calf in the wet season. A newborn dik-dik can stand after only five minutes; an advantage that can assist it greatly being a smaller antelope with many predators around.

Dik-diks are shy animals that will look for cover at the least bit of an alarm. They will seek out vegetation and then crouch flat on the ground. Being so tiny and vulnerable, the list of predators is long but their main predators include hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, caracals, jackals, baboons, eagles and pythons.

    Hunting Methods

Should you be interested in a game hunting safari targeting Guenter’s dik-dik, be aware that you will need to start planning timeously. Hunting safaris for this dik-dik are popular in Uganda and Ethiopia, with various permits and travel arrangements needing to be obtained and confirmed which do take time. A suggestion would be to include this pygme antelope in a larger game hunting adventure to the region, perhaps concentrating on the abundant supply of Africa plains game in East Africa. They are usually hunted using hounds or the walk and stalk method.

    Challenges and Rewards

Being able to hunt one of the Tiny 10 and a specialist Africa plains game antelope is on the bucket list for many hunters. A warning though is that this pygme antelope is difficult to spot and very skilled at evading predators, man being one of them! Guenter’s dik-dik is a diminutive trophy well worth the time and effort needed to plan a game hunting safari to Africa! By including them in a larger Africa plains game hunt, you will not only have the opportunity to hunt this member of the Tiny 10 but also include larger, majestic trophies, such as oribi, Jackson's hartebeest, bush duikers and the Uganda kob, to add to your hunting adventure.

    Rifles and Requirements

7mm’s, .270 and .30 caliber rifles is just way too much gun on these small antelope and most certainly will ruin the trophy. When hunting Guenter’s dik-dik in Africa, a .222 or a .243 with good optics is well suited caliber making sure you get your trophy into the salt.
