Is It Safe To Go Crocodile Hunting In Mozambique?

Is It Safe To Go Crocodile Hunting In Mozambique?

Big game hunting in Mozambique is becoming exceptionally popular amongst international hunters, and the number of annual hunting safaris to this amazing destination is rapidly increasing, as word spreads of the pristine hunting conditions and game on offer. Hunting in Mozambique presents hunters with opportunities for a wide variety of Big Five dangerous game animals, including elephants, Cape buffaloleopards, and lions. Even though Mozambique has some of the highest populations of white rhinos, unfortunately, permits are not issued for this Big 5 species. Hopefully, one day soon. Due to the vast number of wetlands, swamps, rivers, and waterways, Mozambique is packed with hippos and enormous Nile crocodiles. More and more international hunters want to go hunting in Mozambique for these monsters.

Where is the Best Place to Hunt Nile Crocodiles when Hunting in Africa?

Limpopo, South Africa, is classified as a premier crocodile hunting destination. Personally, I think Lake Cahora Basa in Mozambique is a better choice, having been there myself and experienced the destination, conditions, and trophy specimen.

Mozambique's waterways are teeming with dangerous game hunting opportunities, including the Nile crocodile.

Why has Hunting in Mozambique become a Favorite Choice for Hunters?

    • Mozambique is classified as truly wild Africa, and Mozambique hunting outfitters offer exceptional trophies and an unforgettable hunting adventure.
    • Mozambique hunting safaris are also affordable and terrific value for your buck.
    • “Cast and blast” trips are also a top choice, where hunting in Mozambique is combined with a game fishing safari, offering hunters the best of both worlds.

Is Mozambique a Safe Destination for Big Game Hunting?

With big game hunting in Mozambique becoming so popular, the question “Is it safe?” is often asked by those considering their first African hunt to Mozambique.

Over the last 30 years, I have been fortunate enough to visit Mozambique on many occasions. Hunting in Mozambique has taken me to the Marromeu Swamps for Cape buffalo and to Lake Cahora Bassa for the enormous Nile crocodiles.

We have been on game fishing safaris off Barra Beach for Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Couta and Barracuda. Vacations have taken us from the capital Maputo, right to the south near Ponte de Oro. My favorite trip was a week spent on Bazaruto Island. In these tropical waters, game fishing safaris for King Fish, Yellow Fin Tuna, Dog Tooth Tuna, and Dorados are incredible experiences, and record-size fish are regularly being caught in the area. So, with the prehistoric crocodile hunting in Mozambique on the rise, I can verify these African hunts are safe. While recently chatting to one of the Mozambique hunting outfitters, he advised me that when it comes to crocodile hunting in Mozambique, most of the hunters are indeed women, with the fairer sex outdoing the men in terms of crocodile hunting in the area!

So, let us address a few concerns regarding safety when crocodile hunting in Mozambique for those considering this destination for an African hunt.

The Journey to the Crocodile Hunting Grounds

    Arriving in Mozambique

    • Mozambique, over the last few decades, like many African countries, has had its fair share of civil wars. The most recent was between Frelimo and Renamo, ending in 1992.
    • With Lake Cahora Bassa being a favorite choice for crocodile hunting, the nearest airport is, in fact, Tete International Airport. Hunters will fly in using Airlink from South Africa or one of the neighboring countries.
    • Airlink is reliable, dependable, clean, and on time (and they serve beer and wine!). Tete International is a quiet and small point of entry into Mozambique.
    • Passing through customs at Tete International Airport, even with a firearm, is a painless experience. Mozambique hunting outfitters will meet you before even exiting the building and they will assist you with all luggage handling and packing.

The Journey to Lake Cohora Bassa

While the distance from the airport to Lake Cahora Bassa is only about three hundred miles, the journey takes about six hours due to the poor condition of the roads. Along the way you will encounter numerous small African markets selling essentials such as fruit, vegetables, oil, drinks, and freshly made breads. Of course, being Africa, there will be a few bars.

4X4 vehicles are made use of to navigate the potholes along the bumpy route. Depending on the time of day and the weather, you will more than likely overnight in one of the accommodations made available by the Mozambique hunting outfitters.

Views are panoramic, and at night, the waters sparkle with the lights of the illegal local fisherman trying their luck for Kapenta, also known as white bait.

Arrival at your Crocodile Hunting Ground for your African Hunt

The early morning departure will be by deep sea boat across Lake Cahora Bassa, which is more than 180 miles in length, before arriving at the crocodile hunting grounds. An epic hunting adventure will most certainly be on the cards, with excellent game hunting conditions combined with attentive African outfitters to ensure your game hunting safari is exceptional!

During this travel time, you will always be accompanied by members of the Mozambique hunting outfitters, and there won’t be any concerns in terms of safety.

If your crocodile hunting safari in Mozambique is further north in the province of Niassa, a domestic charter flight would be made use of flying out of Tete International Airport.
