    Traveling for the Hunt

For this Cape Buffalo hunting safari in Zimbabwe, hunters will need to fly into Victoria Falls Airport, readily accessible via a 1h45 flight from OR Tambo International in South Africa.

Various regional airlines are available, such as Safair, Cemair, Airlink, and South African Airways. Reward and his team will meet you upon arrival, with the hunting lodge situated roughly 43 miles away.

    The Hunting Concessions

Zimbabwe is renowned for its big game hunting, with exceptional trophies being produced in the region. Hunting takes place in large, unfenced land of the Matetsi Community areas, Bingwa Extension 2 & 3. These hunting grounds offer free-range hunting safaris, in a wild, untamed, and remote concession for an authentic African hunting experience!

The Matesti region provides a mixed terrain for hunting, with woodlands, rivers, hills, and open grasslands providing prime habitat options for an array of species, including dangerous game such as Lion, Leopard, Elephant, and Cape Buffalo, and African plains game, including Sable, Roan antelope, Kudu, and Zebra.

    Hunting Lodge and Accomodations

Just over 40 miles from the Victoria Falls Airport lies the hunting lodge. Beautifully decorated with an African theme, the lodge can host up to 7 people in chalets. The air-conditioned chalets offer en-suite bathrooms and comfortable rooms in which to relax and recoup.

The lodge offers all the modern amenities a hunter could ask for, including a swimming pool, fire pit, chill areas, and some delectable meals, served together with true African hospitality. This oasis in the African wilderness is a tranquil home-away-from-home, with solar and generators available as back-ups should electricity inadvertently be lost.

    Tips when Cape Buffalo Hunting

Buffalo hunting in Zimbabwe is not something to be taken lightly: You are coming face-to-face with a member of the Big 5 and Dangerous 7 that has earned itself the chilling nicknames of “Africa’s Black Death” and “The Widowmaker…” Check out these tips as put together by some experienced game hunters:

    • Cape buffalo possess a good sense of smell as well as excellent hearing. These alert senses, combined with their camouflage ability, make for an interesting, dangerous game hunt! Stay alert, keep your wits about you.
    • Cape buffalo are renowned for their stubborn and unpredictable behavior and can become aggressive without warning, should they feel threatened or if they are wounded. Be prepared, always keep your guard up in the African bush.
    • When hunting these cunning beasts, ensure that your shot placement is accurate before taking the shot. The tough and resilient Cape buffalo is extremely unforgiving of poor shot placement and will not hesitate to charge and defend itself, taking out anything or anyone that it sees as a threat. Again, remember those nicknames…
    • Added to that, the old saying goes that it takes one bullet to down a Buffalo, and another couple to convince it that it’s dead.
    • Listen to your PH. At the end of the day, he has the experience and knows the terrain and lay of the land.

    Firearms

    • There is no limit to the number of firearms that can be imported to Zimbabwe; handguns and powder rifles are allowed, but, like many African countries, no semi-automatic or military-style weapons are allowed. Game hunting by bow is allowed only on private or tribal land, and while there are no caliber minimums, a .375 or bigger is recommended depending on the trophy target.
    • Before the hunt, the hunter must complete the Certificate to Possess Firearms for each weapon and all ammunition in their possession. This form, alongside your letter of invitation, must be presented at the Customs Office before they will issue a firearms permit.
    • If you’re traveling via South Africa, you will also need to comply with the firearms procedure at OR Tambo, which includes stopping at the SA Police Services counter with your travel documents and firearms papers for a customs check and permit issuing.

    Travel Documents

All foreigners entering Zimbabwe require a valid passport that will remain valid for 6 months post-departure, as well as proof of a round-trip ticket showing exit from the country. Entry visas are required for everyone, and you can contact a Zimbabwean embassy or Tiaan, the outfitter, with any queries about this process.
