The Bohor reedbuck is a medium-sized antelope found in Central Africa, with more of the population occurring in the eastern region of Central Africa, versus the western region of Central Africa. Their status by the IUCN is that of “least concern” making them a plausible target for African hunts while hunting in the wild. Their numbers are, however, decreasing due to poachers, game hunters, and loss of habitat.
Their preferred habitat includes moist grasslands, swamplands, as well as woodland areas, where females form herds of up to 10 animals. The Bohor reedbuck is herbivorous and is known to graze with other antelopes, including the hartebeest, topi, puku, and kob. Their diet consists of grasses, along with leaf and reed shoots and they are water-dependent.
Their coat color allows them to camouflage themselves well amongst the vegetation and if threatened, they stand motionless, making them very difficult to spot. Alternatively, they will stand still assessing the danger, then slowly retreat into the cover if close, whistling to the other members of the herd to alert them of danger.
Their predators include lions, hyenas, Nile crocodiles, African wild dogs, and spotted hyenas.

The Bohor Reedbuck is an African plains game hunting safari.
While on your game hunting safari for these African plains game antelopes, look for a medium-sized antelope with a length of around 39-53 inches. Its coat is yellow to gray-brown shades. The fur is quite greasy because of its sebaceous glands secretions and has a strong smell. Males are larger than their female counterparts weighing 77-144 pounds, their necks are thicker and the markings on their coats are more visible and better defined. Only males have horns, which are short, stout and forward-facing horns. They range in length from 9.8 to 13.8 inches. On your African hunt, target the specimen with the largest set of horns to ensure a great game hunting trophy.
African hunts targeting the Bohor reedbuck usually happen when they are most active at dusk or dawn. They hide and rest in the tall grass during daylight hours but will at times leave their shelter to graze and feed.
The challenge on this African hunt is spotting your target. As with many African plains game antelopes, they manage to camouflage themselves extremely well in the habitat’s grasses and reeds, preferring to take cover rather than flee. Even with that being said, they remain one of the easiest animals to approach when game hunting in the wild.
Bohor reedbucks are neither very large nor tough antelope. Accuracy is required by the hunter on longer shots that may present themselves on African hunts. Any caliber from a .243, .308, and of course the 30.06 will adequately complete the job at hand. The rifle needs to be equipped with a good set of optics for potentially longer shots that may be needed for the Bohor reedbuck when hunting in the wild.
