Whether you're hunting with friends, family members, or fellow safari enthusiasts, this package combines authentic dangerous game hunting, experienced professional guidance, and one of Africa's most iconic wilderness regions into a memorable shared hunting adventure.
Most hunters remember their first Cape buffalo because of the animal itself. The size, the attitude, the intensity of the encounter. What keeps many of them coming back, however, is something far less obvious.
Cape buffalo hunting has a way of simplifying the hunt. There are no antlers to measure, no obsession over score sheets, and very few shortcuts. Fresh tracks, experienced trackers, good decisions, and patience become the only things that matter.
The Selous is particularly well suited to this style of hunting. Vast wilderness areas allow buffalo to move naturally across the landscape, often covering significant distances between feeding areas, water sources, and bedding cover. Every track has potential, but no guarantees.
That uncertainty is part of the attraction. A promising set of tracks at first light can lead to an encounter within an hour, or develop into a full day of tracking through some of East Africa's most famous hunting country. Success is never assumed, which makes every opportunity feel earned.
For this reason, veteran hunters consider Cape buffalo the animal that changes how they view hunting in Africa. The trophy matters, but the experience of following buffalo through wild country often becomes the memory that lasts far longer.
Hunters planning this safari are encouraged to familiarize themselves with proper Cape buffalo shot placement before arriving in camp, helping ensure safe, ethical, and successful outcomes when opportunities present themselves.
Many first-time buffalo hunters focus almost entirely on horn width. Experienced professional hunters often look at a much broader picture.
A mature buffalo bull frequently carries the signs of a hard life. Scars across the face and shoulders, worn features, and a heavier, rougher appearance often tell a more complete story than measurements alone. Older bulls may show thinning hair around the face and neck, a heavier body structure, and the deliberate, confident behavior that comes from years of surviving predators, droughts, and hunting pressure.
Attitude can also reveal a great deal. Mature bulls often appear less hurried than younger animals. They may stand their ground longer, watch the hunting party more carefully, and carry themselves with a level of confidence that younger bulls have yet to develop.
Part of the appeal of buffalo hunting is that every animal tells a story. While trophy quality remains important, many hunters find their most memorable trophies are not necessarily the widest-horned bulls, but the old warriors that clearly show the marks of a lifetime spent surviving in Africa's wilderness.
In areas such as the Selous, where buffalo populations move freely, encounters with these old bulls remain one of the experiences that keeps hunters returning to Africa year after year.
While this safari includes one Cape buffalo trophy fee, the Selous offers opportunities to pursue a remarkable variety of additional species throughout the hunt.
Hunters often choose to add a second buffalo, but the region is equally well known for outstanding plains game hunts. Among the most sought-after species are White-bearded Wildebeest, a distinctive East African subspecies highly regarded by hunters pursuing wildebeest hunts, and the elusive Chobe Bushbuck, one of Africa's most attractive antelope and a popular addition for hunters interested in bushbuck hunts.
The concession also supports Lichtenstein's Hartebeest, Bohor Reedbuck, Warthog, Zebra, Impala, Baboon, and a variety of other East African plains game species depending on quota availability.
One of the advantages of hunting in the Selous is the diversity of wildlife encountered throughout the concession. A morning spent tracking buffalo can easily produce opportunities for several additional species, creating the kind of varied hunting experience that has made the region famous among safari hunters.
Additional species and trophy fees can be viewed using the "Additional Animals" dropdown menu associated with this safari package.
International hunters arrive via Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
From Dar es Salaam, hunters may choose between a charter flight into the Selous region or a road transfer to the concession. Charter flights land at an airstrip approximately 30 minutes from camp, while road transfers can take up to 15 hours depending on conditions and routing.
Neither charter flights nor road transfers are included in the safari package price.
Accommodation is provided in comfortable safari-style tented camps positioned within the Selous ecosystem. The camp overlooks the surrounding wilderness and provides an authentic East African safari atmosphere while still offering the comforts hunters expect after a long day in the field.
Spacious tents, private facilities, excellent meals, and evenings around the campfire create the classic safari experience that has drawn hunters to Tanzania for generations. The focus here is not luxury for its own sake, but comfortable accommodation that allows hunters to remain immersed in one of Africa's most famous wilderness regions.
