    Hunting in Tanzania

Tanzania remains one of Africa’s premier destinations for authentic big game safaris, offering vast unfenced concessions, low hunting pressure, and exceptional biodiversity across savannas, miombo forests, river systems, and wetlands.

The remote Liparamba region supports four of Africa’s Big 5 species, creating opportunities for traditional lion hunting in Tanzania and free-range leopard hunting in Tanzania alongside Cape Buffalo and Elephant hunting in one of East Africa’s last truly wild hunting areas.

Beyond dangerous game, the region is also renowned for exceptional East African plains game hunting. Hunters may pursue species such as Livingstone Eland, Common Waterbuck, Spotted Hyena, Warthog, Porcupine, Klipspringer, and a wide variety of antelope species throughout the course of the safari.

    The Outfitter hosting the Hunt

Operating multiple concessions across Tanzania, including hunting areas within the Selous ecosystem and Masailand, Shabeck and his experienced team specialize in delivering authentic East African hunting safaris focused on professionalism, conservation, and traditional free-range hunting experiences. With extensive knowledge of Tanzania’s remote wilderness regions, the outfitter offers hunters access to a wide variety of dangerous game and East African plains game species across differing terrain types and habitats.

In addition to dangerous game hunting safaris, the team also offers photographic safaris throughout Tanzania, reflecting their broader commitment to wildlife conservation and responsible safari management. For American and international hunters booking extended safaris, there is also the option of accessing additional concessions to experience different hunting regions and species distributions during the course of the safari, although this is at an additional cost.

    Available Hunting Trophies

One of the major attractions of a full bag Tanzanian safari is the sheer diversity of species available throughout the course of the hunt. Depending on quota availability and the concession being hunted, hunters may pursue a wide variety of dangerous game species, including hunting buffalo in Tanzania and elephant hunting in Tanzania, as well as opportunities for traditional hippo hunts and crocodile hunts within the Ruvuma River systems and surrounding floodplains.

Bordering Mozambique and positioned within one of southern Tanzania’s remote wilderness ecosystems, the Liparamba region is characterized by vast miombo woodlands, rocky outcrops, dense riverine vegetation, and seasonal wetlands that support exceptional wildlife diversity throughout the year. The area also forms part of an important wildlife corridor linking Tanzania’s southern ecosystems with northern Mozambique, helping sustain healthy populations of dangerous game and East African plains game species.

Beyond dangerous game, the Liparamba region supports species such as Livingstone Eland, Sable, Waterbuck, Warthog, Klipspringer, Bushpig, and East African antelope. Hunters interested in predator or specialty species may also encounter opportunities for hyena hunting in Tanzania, including the elusive striped hyena, together with Porcupine, Baboon, and other smaller game species unique to the region.

    Traveling to the Hunting Grounds

American and international hunters should arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam before continuing on a domestic flight to Songea. From there, a road transfer of approximately four hours will take hunters to the concession and safari camp.

Please note that both the domestic flight and road transfer are excluded from the safari price.

    Tanzanian Hunting Laws and Regulations

Tanzania maintains strict hunting regulations designed to support ethical hunting practices, sustainable wildlife management, and conservation throughout the country’s safari hunting areas. Hunters are encouraged to confirm all current regulations with their outfitter before traveling, as laws and requirements may change periodically.

Key hunting regulations in Tanzania include:

    • The official Tanzanian hunting season generally runs from 1 July through 31 December
    • All hunts are accompanied by a government game scout responsible for ensuring compliance with hunting laws and verifying trophy legality before sign-off at the conclusion of the safari
    • Trophy hunting may only take place during daylight hours, typically between 05:30 and 18:30, with no night hunting or hunting by artificial light permitted
    • Hunting from a vehicle, or pursuing animals with a vehicle, is strictly prohibited. Hunters must be a minimum distance from the vehicle before taking a shot
    • Hunting near permanent waterholes, salt licks, or natural water sources is generally prohibited, except for specific species such as Crocodile, Waterbuck, Puku, Sitatunga, and certain bird species
    • The hunting of pregnant females, juveniles, or females accompanied by dependent young is forbidden and may result in significant penalties
    • The legal minimum caliber for dangerous game hunting in Tanzania is .375, while .240 is generally accepted as the minimum caliber for plains game species
    • Leopard and Lion hunts may legally utilize baiting methods, provided the bait animal forms part of the licensed safari quota

    Why Consider Hunting in Tanzania?

Few hunting destinations still offer the scale, authenticity, and free-range hunting conditions found within Tanzania’s remote wilderness concessions. From vast miombo woodlands and river systems to floodplains and dense bushveld, the country continues to provide one of Africa’s last truly traditional safari hunting experiences, with low hunting pressure and enormous unfenced hunting areas.

Beyond exceptional dangerous game opportunities, Tanzania supports remarkable biodiversity, with hunters able to pursue a wide variety of East African plains game and specialty species throughout the course of a safari. The country also plays an important conservation role within Africa, with regulated hunting revenue contributing toward anti-poaching initiatives, wildlife management, and local community development across many remote hunting regions.

For hunters seeking a classic East African safari built around wilderness, patience, and authentic fair-chase hunting, Tanzania remains one of the continent’s premier safari destinations. Before arriving in camp, hunters are encouraged to review our shot placement guide for hunting game in Africa to better prepare for the wide variety of species and hunting situations encountered during a traditional Tanzanian safari.
