Western Roan Hunting

Roan antelope, with their pale reddish-brown fur and black and white masked faces are one of Africa’s favorite plains game hunts. Both male and female Roan have horns enabling Roan to defend themselves from predators patrolling the savanna of Cameroon. In Africa, there are six recognized sub-species of Roan, and the Western Roan is found in this Northern Savannah region of Cameroon in the open woodland areas. Roan hunts often take place in the late afternoon as Roan tend to drink at that time of day. River banks and other water sources on the concession will be checked for fresh tracks.

Roan are listed and classified by Cites as a species of antelope of “least concern” and as such a Cites permit is not required.

Northwestern Buffalo Hunting in Cameroon

Northwestern Buffalo are also known as Western or West African Buffalo. West African Buffalo are endemic to the northern savanna regions of Cameroon. In the southern more forested areas, you will find the Forest, or Dwarf Buffalo which are distinguished by horn shape, color and size.

While Northwestern Buffalo may be smaller than Cape Buffalo, many hunters consider the Northwestern Buffalo to be more aggressive and unpredictable. Bottom line when Buffalo hunting, they are all dangerous. Buffalo do not forgive or forget.

Hunting in Cameroon Savannah Territory

This concession is popular for hunting a variety of Duiker species such as Red FlankedWestern Bush, along with the sought after Nigerian Bohor Reedbuck and Sing-Sing Waterbuck. The area of Kourouk is also famous for trophy Lord Derby Eland which can be hunted at a trophy price of US$ 7900. Nigerian Bohor Reedbuck at US$ 1200 and Sing-Sing Waterbuck for US$ 1850 are also coveted trophies.

The hunting concession is more than 350 000 acres, with the Faro River forming the Eastern and Western boundary,  which in certain places can be three hundred yards wide. The Faro River is also packed filled with Hippos, making Hippo hunts another favorite.  To add a unique species to your trophy room,  a Central African Rock Python  can be hunted for US$ 2750.

Nocturnal hunts are also available for those who wish to experience a night safari, which includes Spotted Hyena Hunting (US$ 1480), Porcupine US$ 450 and Civets at US$ 725.

Plains Game Hunts (Additional Species)

The safari in Cameroon will give collectors the chance to hunt exceptional additional trophies.

If freshwater fishing is a favorite activity, the Faro River is packed with Tigerfish and giant Catfish. Low light / evening fishing safaris are aimed at Nile Perch which makes excellent eating. Your private chef of this African safari will be delighted to prepare this delicacy.

The best time to go hunting in Cameroon

The preferred time for savanna hunting in Cameroon is during the dry season, which runs from January through March. During these months, grasses are lower, and water sources become scarce. These conditions make finding and spotting them a little easier. The dry months also makes the terrain a little easier to navigate, with fewer obstacles such as mud pools and dense and overgrown vegetation.

During these months, the warmer and drier conditions of the savanna as long days are needed for tracking and stalking. Mornings and evenings in the savanna can be cooler, but midday heat can be intense, so remaining hydrated is critical.
