    Conservation & the Rhino Programme

This hunt takes place on a private 33,000-acre wildlife ranch in South Africa's Northern Cape, home to one of the country's important Southern White Rhino populations. The Rhino green hunt forms part of the reserve's ongoing conservation and wildlife management programme, providing hunters with a unique opportunity to participate in a true hunt that directly supports Rhino protection.

Unlike a traditional trophy hunt, the Rhino green hunt is centred around conservation, veterinary management, and responsible wildlife stewardship. The final shot is taken with a dart rather than a bullet, allowing essential procedures such as health assessments, monitoring, and population management to take place. Revenue generated from these hunts contributes directly to anti-poaching efforts, habitat management, Rhino breeding initiatives, and the long-term protection of these remarkable animals.

The philosophy on the reserve is simple: they do not breed to hunt; they hunt to protect.

    Hunting in South Africa

South Africa remains one of Africa's most popular hunting destinations, offering excellent infrastructure, professional outfitters, and an incredible variety of game species. From dangerous game and the Big Five to some of the continent's finest plains game hunting, the country continues to attract hunters from around the world.

For hunters travelling with family or observers, South Africa also offers countless non-hunting attractions, including world-class wineries, deep-sea fishing, wildlife reserves, historical sites, and spectacular coastal destinations. Combining quality hunting with comfortable travel and accommodation is one of the reasons hunting in South Africa remains so popular with American and international hunters.

The African Outfitter Hosting the Hunt

This hunt is hosted by Jaco and his team of professional hunters, who operate across some of Africa's most respected hunting destinations, including South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Cameroon, and Tanzania. Their experience spans a wide range of African species, with a particular focus on dangerous game and professionally guided Big Five safaris.

Widely respected within the international hunting community, Jaco is a Craig Boddington-endorsed outfitter and recipient of both the Dallas Safari Club Outfitter of the Year Award and the SCI Outstanding International Hunter of the Year Award. These achievements reflect decades of experience guiding hunters across Africa's diverse hunting areas.

For this Rhino, Buffalo, and Roan safari, hunters can expect a well-organised operation, experienced trackers, knowledgeable PHs, and access to carefully managed hunting areas. The team works closely with landowners, wildlife managers, and local communities to ensure that hunting remains an important part of conservation and sustainable wildlife utilisation.

Traveling to Hunt in South Africa

Travel to this safari begins with arrival at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. South Africa remains one of the most accessible hunting destinations for American and international hunters, with regular flights arriving daily from major cities around the world.

From Johannesburg, hunters will take a domestic flight to Kimberley Airport, with flight times averaging approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Depending on flight schedules and arrival times, an overnight stay in Johannesburg may be required before continuing to Kimberley. Many hunters choose to stay at African Sky Boutique Hotel, which specialises in accommodating international hunters and offers assistance with firearm permits and airport transfers.

Upon arrival in Kimberley, guests are met by Jaco or a member of his team for the transfer to the wildlife ranch. Anyone travelling with their own firearm will need to complete a SAPS 520 temporary firearm import permit before arrival in South Africa, while rifle hire is available for hunters who prefer not to travel with firearms.

    Luxury Accommodation & Lodge Facilities

After a day in the field, guests return to a luxury five-star lodge designed to provide comfort, privacy, and exceptional hospitality. Spacious villas offer en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, private lounges, fireplaces, and beautifully appointed living spaces, creating the perfect environment to relax after the day's hunt.

The lodge features a fully equipped gym, swimming pool, and on-site spa offering a variety of treatments for hunters and observers alike. Meals are a highlight of the experience, with gourmet cuisine, quality South African wines, and a selection of local game dishes regularly featured on the menu.

Observers and non-hunting guests have plenty to enjoy during the safari, including bush walks, horse safaris, clay pigeon shooting, game drives, and visits to the Rhino breeding project and nursery. The quality of the accommodation, observer activities, and straightforward travel arrangements make this an excellent choice for American and international hunters travelling with spouses, family members, or non-hunting companions.

    The Cape Buffalo Hunt

No dangerous game animal has earned a reputation quite like the Cape buffalo. Often referred to as Africa's Black Death, a mature hard-bossed bull demands respect, patience, and careful shot placement from the moment the hunt begins. For many hunters, buffalo hunts represent the ultimate dangerous game challenge, combining excitement, uncertainty, and the need for absolute concentration.

On this 33,000-acre wildlife ranch, buffalo hunting in South Africa typically starts early as hunters and their professional hunter search for fresh tracks along game trails, water sources, and feeding areas. Once a suitable bull has been located, the real work begins. Wind direction, terrain, and a cautious approach all become critical as the distance closes and the final stalk unfolds.

A wounded buffalo is widely regarded as one of Africa's most dangerous animals, making an understanding of Cape buffalo shot placement essential before the hunt. Hunters should also familiarise themselves with buffalo anatomy and be prepared to place a rapid follow-up shot if required.

As with all dangerous game hunts in South Africa, the legal minimum calibre is a .375. Many hunters choose larger calibres such as the .404 Jeffery, .458 Winchester Magnum, or .458 Lott, while double rifles chambered in .470 Nitro Express or larger remain popular options for close-range encounters.

    The Rhino Green Hunt

A White Rhino green hunt offers a rare opportunity to take part in one of Africa's most unique hunting experiences. While the stalk, tracking, and fieldcraft remain very similar to a traditional Rhino hunt, the final shot is taken with a tranquiliser dart rather than a bullet.

The objective is to safely immobilise the Rhino so that wildlife veterinarians and conservation teams can carry out essential procedures such as health assessments, DNA collection, microchipping, horn management, and ongoing population monitoring. Once the work is complete, the Rhino is safely revived and returned to the reserve.

Despite the different outcome, the hunt itself remains every bit as exciting. Closing the distance on an animal that can weigh more than 3,500 pounds requires patience, teamwork, and careful planning. Hunters wanting to learn more about the anatomy and positioning required for a successful darting shot should review our Rhino shot placement guide before the safari.

More importantly, every Rhino hunting in South Africa experience conducted on the reserve contributes directly to conservation, anti-poaching initiatives, and the long-term protection of Southern White Rhino populations.

    The Roan Antelope Hunt

The Roan antelope is widely regarded as one of Africa's most prestigious plains game trophies. With their striking facial markings, impressive curved horns, and limited availability compared to many other antelope species, successful Roan hunts remain a significant achievement for many African hunters.  Unlike many of Africa's more common plains game species, Roan are not animals encountered on every safari. Their limited availability, impressive size, and striking appearance have made Roan hunting in South Africa increasingly desirable among visiting hunters looking to add something truly special to their trophy collection.

Although often overshadowed by the Rhino and Cape buffalo in this package, the Roan should not be underestimated. These alert and wary animals demand patience, good fieldcraft, and careful stalking. Pursuing a mature Roan bull provides a fitting conclusion to a safari that combines conservation, dangerous game, and premium plains game hunting in one remarkable experience.

Additional plains game and specialty species can be added to this safari, allowing hunters to build a broader trophy package around the main Rhino, Buffalo, and Roan experience. Popular additions include Sable hunting, Tsessebe, Golden Wildebeest, Black Impala, and several other premium African species.

    Why Choose This Hunt?

A White Rhino green hunt, Cape buffalo, and Roan antelope are three very different hunting experiences, yet together they create a safari unlike any other. From participating in meaningful Rhino conservation to tracking one of Africa's most dangerous animals and pursuing one of its most sought-after antelope species, this package offers variety, challenge, and purpose in equal measure.

Combined with luxury accommodation, experienced professional hunters, and a private 33,000-acre wildlife ranch in the Northern Cape, this safari delivers far more than a traditional hunting trip. It is an opportunity to experience three remarkable African species while contributing directly to the future of Rhino conservation.
