Traveling for the Exotic Plains Game Safari

For this plains game hunt in Masailand, Tanzania, international travelers will need to reach the city of Arusha. While there are no direct flights from most cities in the USA or Europe, hunters will be able to find flights with one or two layovers. 

Popular airlines that fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) include Qatar Airways, Delta Airlines (codeshares with KLM), Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, and Kenya Airways.  A travel option would be flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and then taking a shuttle or taxi to Arusha, which is about 50km (31 miles) away. 

Alternatively, you can fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam and then take a domestic flight or a bus to Arusha. 

Traveling from Arusha to the hunting concession will be by road transfer, taking 2 ½ to 4 hours depending on the respective hunting area (species dependent). A private charter flight can also be arranged which would take approximately 40 minutes.

Health when Safari Hunting in Tanzania

Masailand in Tanzania is a malaria area. Your general practitioner will prescribe preventative measures such as Doxycycline, Mefloquine, or Atovaquone. There are no compulsory vaccinations when hunting in Tanzania, except for the routine vaccinations you would have received for Measles, Hepatitis, Polio, and Typhoid.

On any African hunting safari, it is suggested to ensure that you have received your “shots” in the last 10 years for the likes of Rabies and Tetanus. While Jaco has a general first aid available, remember personal effects such as contact lens solution, prescription medication, sunblock etc.

Firearm applications must be applied for before commencement of the hunting safari so that it is ready and available for collection at the airport on your arrival. If not ready, your firearms will not be allowed to leave the airport.

What is the best time to go hunting in Masailand?

The official hunting season in Tanzania runs from July 1st to December 31^st.  The best time for a hunting safari in Tanzania is the dry season, which is from late June to October. The rainy season in the west starts in November, so late season hunts are concentrated on the northern blocks.

What is "Dipping and Packing" following a African Hunting Safari?

Dip & Pack as it is commonly referred to is the minimum processing requirement that a trophy must undergo to prepare for export and shipping. All "body parts" of the animal, including bones, skull, teeth should be dry and free of any "undried" pieces of hide. Hides must be dried to the extent that they look brittle enough to crack when bent and Buffalo trophies must be packed immediately after treatment.

The "Dip and Pack" Process Includes:

• Soaking inner cores in boiling water for a minimum period
• Soaking again in a .1% chlorine bleach
• Soaking the inner cores again in a 5% Hydrogen peroxide solution
