    Hunting in Tanzania, Masailand

    The hunting concession starts south of Tarangire National Park, stretching north of Lake Manyara and northeast to the Serengeti. Habitat is mainly Acacia bush country with open plains, rocky outcrops and patches of thick Acacia thorn bush.

    Masailand is known for unique and endemic species, a favorite area for collectors and serious hunters.  Hunters travel from far to hunt species such as Grants Gazelle, Fringe-Eared Oryx, Gerenuk, Thomson's Gazelle, Cokes Hartebeest, East Africa Impala and Chandlers Mountain Reedbuck and White Bearded Wildebeest.

    Traveling for the Hunt 

    For this hunt in Masailand, Tanzania, international travelers will need to reach the city of Arusha. While there are no direct flights from most cities in the USA or Europe, hunters will be able to find flights with one or two layovers. 

    Popular airlines that fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) include Qatar Airways, Delta Airlines (code-shares with KLM), Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, and Kenya Airways. 

    A travel option would be flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and then taking a shuttle or taxi to Arusha, which is about 50km (31 miles) away. 

    Alternatively, you can fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam and then take a domestic flight or a bus to Arusha. 

    Traveling from Arusha to the hunting concession will be by road transfer, taking 2 ½ to 4 hours depending on the respective hunting area (species dependent). A private charter flight can also be arranged which would take approximately 40 minutes.

    Health on a Safari in Tanzania

    Masailand in Tanzania is a malaria area. Your general practitioner will prescribe preventative measures such as Doxycycline, Mefloquine, or Atovaquone. There are no compulsory vaccinations when hunting in Tanzania, except for the routine vaccinations you would have received for Measles, Hepatitis, Polio, and Typhoid.

    On any African hunting safari, it is suggested to ensure that you have received your “shots” in the last 10 years for the likes of Rabies and Tetanus. While Jaco has a general first aid available, remember personal effects such as contact lens solution, prescription medication, sunblock etc.

    After a long day’s hunting, you will enjoy some of the finest cuisine while listening to the sound of wild lions and the African night.

    Hunting Lodge and Accomodations

    Accommodation in Tanzania will consist of upmarket typical African-style tents. All safari tents have en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, and all the comforts expected when hunting in Tanzania. Internet and Wi-Fi are also available and besides the excellent cuisine, at night there will be with cold beer, fine wines, and scotch.

     Firearm Applications & Permits 

    Firearm applications must be applied for before commencement of the hunting safari so that it is ready and available for collection at the airport on your arrival. If not ready, your firearms will not be allowed to leave the airport.

    Firearm applications will be made on your behalf by the outfitter. Fees associated with rifles permits are U$ 350.

    • Each hunter may import up to 3 firearms into Tanzania.
    • Handguns, semi-automatic and automatic firearms are strictly prohibited.
    • A maximum of 200 rounds is permitted per firearm.

    The best time to go hunting in Tanzania?

    The official hunting season in Tanzania runs from July 1st to December 31st.  The best time for a hunting safari in Tanzania is the dry season, which is from late June to October. The rainy season in the west start in November, so late season hunts are concentrated on the northern blocks.

    What is "Dip and Pack" following a Hunt in Tanzania?

    Dip & Pack as it is commonly referred to is the minimum processing requirement that a trophy must undergo in order to prepare for export and shipping. All "body parts" of the animal, including bones, skull, teeth should be dry and free of any "undried" pieces  of hide. Hides must be dried to the extent that they look brittle enough to crack when bent and Buffalo trophies must be packed immediately after treatment.

    The "Dip and Pack" Process Includes:

    • Soaking inner cores in boiling water for a minimum period
    • Soaking again in a .1% chlorine bleach
    • Soaking the inner cores again in a 5% Hydrogen peroxide solution
