Jaco operates in various Concessions in the Caprivi Strip, boasting some of the best big game hunting areas on the Chobe River. Each area is unique, offering a variety of vegetation types and zones allowing the hunter to pursue game in different areas as you move across this free-range landscape to pursue the hunt.
These free-range hunting concessions are situated on the Namibian side north of the famous Chobe River. The area consists of open plains, Mopane woodlands, swamps and rivers with relatively undulating terrain. With no rocky outcrops or mountains, the Caprivi is a stark contrast to the rest of the arid Namibian country.
The rich diversity of wildlife that inhabits this area is representative of these areas. The hunting safaris starts with an international flight into Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek. From Windhoek, you will take a domestic/regional flight from Hosea Kutako to Katima Mulilo Airport. Regional flights take place at a frequency of three times per week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Spending a night or two in Windhoek, before or after the safari is suggested. The Hilton Hotel is rifle friendly and there are a variety of popular venues for fine dining and sampling a few local beers, such as "The Butchers Block", or " Joe's Beer House".
Windhoek is easy to navigate, and transport is affordable. Download the Yango App and make use of Windhoek's version of Uber".
If you’d rather soak in the country’s diverse scenery, an overland transfer via vehicle rental is also an option. Though it takes longer, this route allows you to truly experience Namibia’s ever-changing landscapes, making the journey just as memorable as the Cape Buffalo hunt itself. For hunters who have extra time in their schedule to enjoy this option, the landscapes are truly magnificent.
Spot and Stalk Technique: Being cold blooded, Crocodiles are often spotted sunning themselves on riverbanks. The trick thereafter is to get close to the Crocodile, they have incredible senses and shot placement is critical. A poor shot may see your trophy Crocodile slipping back into the waterways. This is the most common method used when Crocodile hunting in Namibia.
Ambushing your trophy Crocodile: Hunters can use ambush techniques by waiting near feeding spots or basking areas along the river and sand banks. Crocodiles are known to return to “favorite spots”
Hippo hunting in Namibia will depend on where a trophy Bull is located. The Bull could either be in deep waters, cooling in the heat of the day, wallowing in shallow pools, or traversing from/to land to feed. Shooting a Hippo in deep water will require perfect shot placement into the front of the skull, or penetrating the brain from the side, between the eye and ear.
The Hippo Bull will be targeted using the spot and stalk method or depending on water levels from a “Makoro” (wooden dugout canoe). A Hippo may also be spotted on land, while traveling to and from the waterways, at dusk or in the cooler temperatures to feed. A Hippo “highway” is difficult to miss, and on land, shot placement will be into the brain, or from the broadside into the vital organs.
