Best Time to Hunt Leopard in Damaraland

Leopard hunting in Damaraland can be conducted throughout Namibia's hunting season, which typically runs from February through November. As the season progresses and conditions become drier, water sources become more predictable and visibility often improves, helping professional hunters monitor bait sites and leopard activity more effectively.

Many hunters prefer the cooler months between May and September, when daytime temperatures are more comfortable and long hours spent checking baits or sitting in blinds become far more enjoyable. Regardless of the month selected, Damaraland's vast landscapes and healthy leopard population continue to provide excellent hunting opportunities throughout the season.

    Preparation for Your Leopard Hunt

Leopard hunting is a pursuit that rewards patience, preparation, and attention to detail. Before arriving in camp, hunters should ensure they are comfortable with their chosen rifle, have quality optics, and spend time studying proper leopard shot placement to maximize the chances of a clean and ethical harvest.

As with all dangerous game hunting, success often comes down to remaining disciplined, listening carefully to your professional hunter, and being prepared when the opportunity finally presents itself.

    Traveling to Namibia

International hunters will arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) near Windhoek, Namibia's primary international gateway. Depending on flight schedules, many hunters choose to overnight in Windhoek before transferring to the hunting area, providing an opportunity to relax after the long journey and experience a little of Namibia before the safari begins.

Windhoek is modern, safe, easy to navigate, and offers excellent restaurants, accommodation, shopping facilities, and secure rifle storage options. For many hunters from the United States and Canada, Namibia is one of Africa's easiest hunting destinations to travel through.

    Trophy Preparation & Export

This safari includes trophy preparation and delivery to a local export-approved taxidermist. Commonly referred to as "Dip & Pack," this process prepares the trophy for legal export by ensuring all veterinary and international shipping requirements are met before transport to your chosen taxidermist or destination country.

The process helps protect the trophy during shipment and forms an important part of exporting African hunting trophies internationally.

    Rifles & Firearm Permits

Namibia remains one of the most hunter-friendly destinations in Africa when it comes to traveling with firearms. Hunters bringing their own rifle can obtain a temporary firearm import permit on arrival by presenting proof of ownership together with the required safari documentation supplied by the outfitter.

Many international hunters prefer to travel with their own trusted rifle, while quality rental rifles are also available for those wishing to avoid airline firearm logistics altogether.

How This Leopard Hunt is Conducted

Leopard hunting in Damaraland begins long before the hunter arrives in camp. Jaco's team spends considerable time identifying active leopard areas, establishing bait sites, and monitoring activity across the concession. This preparation allows the hunting team to focus their efforts on mature toms rather than simply searching for leopard once the safari begins.

Each day is guided by fresh information gathered from bait sites, tracks, and trail camera activity. Once a suitable leopard is regularly visiting a bait, a blind is positioned and the waiting game begins. Leopard hunting often rewards patience more than anything else, with success frequently depending on remaining focused and ready when a brief opportunity presents itself.

When the moment arrives, accurate leopard shot placement becomes critical. A mature leopard is one of Africa's most respected predators and a clean, ethical shot is essential for both hunter safety and a successful outcome.

What is Trophy Dip & Pack?

Many first-time African hunters hear the term "Dip & Pack" without fully understanding what it means. Following the successful harvest of a trophy leopard, the skin, skull, and other trophy components must undergo a specialized preparation process before they can be legally exported to your home country.

Dip & Pack is the industry term used to describe this export preparation process. The trophy is professionally cleaned, treated, dried, and prepared in accordance with veterinary and international shipping requirements before being transferred to an approved taxidermist or export agent. This ensures the trophy is preserved correctly and can be shipped safely and legally.

For hunters traveling from the United States, Canada, Europe, and other international destinations, Dip & Pack forms  an important part of the trophy export process and helps ensure your leopard arrives home in excellent condition.
