Leopard Hunting in Namibia

Leopards are highly intelligent, have incredible senses and when wounded, like to charge. Hunting Leopard is a game of wits and patience and “cat and mouse”, seeing who can outsmart who.

Leopards in Namibia are slightly smaller than their African cousins due to the semi-arid conditions, but can still weigh more than 160 pounds, which is huge. Leopards have large territories which is why extensive areas of the hunting concession will be baited before commencement of the hunt. In Namibia, Leopards tend to show a preference for taking a bait when Zebra or donkey meat is utilized. Classified as a vulnerable species by the IUCN, a CITES permit must be required before commencement of the Leopard hunt.  Only fully mature Leopards are legally allowed to be hunted in Namibia.

Traveling to go Trophy Leopard Hunting in Namibia

This Leopard hunt will commence with the hunting party  touching down into Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek. Due to length of the road transfer, you may need to overnight in Windhoek depending on the arrival time of your international flight.  The Hilton Hotel is recommended, and has secure facilities for rifle storage, plus a great rooftop bar and pool. The Hilton can also arrange your collection/transfers from Hosea Kutako and drop off again for your departing flight (plus the breakfasts are great). But, there are many fabulous hotels in Windhoek, so hunters are spoiled for choice.

In Windhoek, there are many popular venues for dining and sampling a few of the local beers and steaks, such as “The Butchers Block”, or ” Joe’s Beer house”. Having hunted in Namibia on numerous occasions we have frequently visited these establishments. Both are highly recommended.

Windhoek is easy to navigate and local travel is very affordable. You can download the Yango App and make use of Windhoek’s version of Uber”. Near the hotels are a variety of retail shopping facilities for any last minute purchases (or to purchase a bottle of your favorite malt).

Rifles and Ammunition, on a Hunt in Namibia

The Namibian government understands the contributions being made by international hunters and you will be welcomed to Namibia. Should you choose to bring your own rifle, it is a simple, quick and painless process. On arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, you will need to proceed to firearm collections. The Namibian Police have an office outside international arrivals. Once you present the police officials with proof of ownership and the letter of invitation from Jaco, you will be issued a permit at no cost.

Leopard Hunting Method

The hunting concession covers thousands of acres, meaning there are plenty of big cats available. Prior to commencement of the safari in Namibia, Jaco’s team will start baiting selected areas in order to start the process of attracting these. Leopards have big territories that they patrol covering many miles. A typical day Leopard hunting in Namibia will be to leave the hunting lodge at first light after a light breakfast. You and the team will then head out, traverse the concession, checking and restocking baited area.

Trails cams will be made use of to check activity and to try and identify size, sex and age of the Leopard once on the bait. Once a trophy Leopard has been identified, a temporary blind will be constructed using local materials and it will then be “game on”, and most certainly a game of patience. Leopards also respond well to callers, such as the Fox Pro units. The challenge of course in this instance is getting the cat to within shooting distance. As Namibia does not allow dangerous game hunting with a bow, a Leopard on this safari cannot be hunted in with a bow/cross bow.

What is “Dip and Pack” when Hunting Exportable Leopard in Namibia?

Dip & Pack as it is commonly referred to is the minimum processing requirement that a trophy Leopard must undergo in order to prepare for export and shipping. All “body parts”, including bones, skull, teeth should be dry and free of any undried pieces  of hide. Hides must be dried to the extent that they look brittle enough to crack when bent and trophies must be packed immediately after treatment.

The Dip and Pack Process Includes:

  • Soaking inner cores in boiling water for a minimum period
  • Soaking again in a .1% chlorine bleach
  • Soaking the inner cores again in a 5% Hydrogen peroxide solution
