    Hunting the forests of Cameroon

For adventurous and serious hunters choosing forest hunting and untamed wilderness, Cameroon provides extra-ordinary African hunts deep within the tropical jungles. Jungles in the south of Cameroon, comprise of dense vegetation and are home to some of the rarest and illusive species, highly adapted to conditions in the forests. A true paradise for a handful of dedicated hunters and collectors.

With Bongo usually being the first prize for hunters, the forest and jungle animals also include:

    • Dwarf Forest Buffalo and Sitatunga
    • Giant Forest Hog and Red River Hog
    • Blue, White Bellied and Black Fronted Duiker

These species present challenging hunts in thick vegetation, dense cover and require close-quarter stalking. Hunting the forests of Cameroon requires hunters to be in good physical shape as terrain can be difficult to navigate.

Additional Species (Pay only Trophy Fee)

A safari in Cameroon is similar to hunting in Tanzania and Zambia. These hunts for some of Africa’s most sought after trophies are “not at a discount”, due to a  short hunting season and limited available quota.

    Protective Clothing in the Forests

These hunting grounds are typically classified as Tropical Rain Forest. Rain forests cover more than 46% of the national territory in Cameroon.

As can be expected in the tropical rain forest, hunting conditions will be humid and wet. Humidity levels can reach up to 85%. Rainfall in the forest areas of Cameroon average’s between 1800mm and 4000mm per year.

Temperatures will be very warm in the midday and evenings in the forests can be fresh to cool. When preparing for the safari, you will need to pack according to this unique hunting environment where hunters are constantly damp.

    Hunting Lodge & Accomodation

Safari tents and rooms are made use of adjacent to a comfortable lounge and outdoor entertainment areas. These camp facilities are top class and comfortable.

Forest camps in Cameroon have all the typical amenities including, en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold showers etc. Satellite phones with vouchers are available in camp, but when hunting in Africa, it is always suggested to bring your own.

    Dwarf Buffalo Hunting

Hunting Dwarf Buffalo’s take place in deep vegetation within the rain forests. These Dwarf Buffalo, also referred to as Forest Buffalo live in herds of up to 25 in a family group.Being predominantly grazers, Dwarf Buffalo are often found within the open areas or clearings. The Buffalo hunt will take place in the thick and dense areas with low visibility. Shots taken are going to be fired at close range.

Many hunters are drawn to these Buffalo hunts are they are one of the most difficult due to the conditions within the forest. Stalking a Dwarf Buffalo along resident pygmy tractors in the middle of the Cameroon forest, must be one of the most memorable hunting adventures. Not many hunters can tick this Buffalo hunt off the list.

    Rifles & Ammunition’s

Due to issues associated with lack of visibility, rifles with open sites or with optics with low magnification are recommended. Red dot scopes will also function well in the thick brush. High quality ammunition with expanding tips are a requirement, to effect maximum damage and ensure a quick, humane and ethical kill.

    Sitatunga Hunting Methods

Sitatunga hunts can be difficult as these antelope love to stay in thick cover near swampy and marshy areas. Their long-splayed hooves are perfectly designed and adapted for walking and traversing this difficult terrain.

Your team of Pygmy trackers will assist with finding and following fresh spoor. Once the trophy Sitatunga is spotted, the real challenge is going to be sneaking in to get a clear shot through the thick and dense areas within the forest.

How forest hunting contributes to Conservation

Safari hunting in Cameroon contributes immensely to wildlife conservation. Hunting is strictly regulated through government, ensuring sustainability. Hunting revenue supports local communities by creating work opportunities such as camp staff, skinners, trackers and chefs as well as supporting conservation initiates.

By booking a forest hunting safari in Cameroon, hunters are directly contributing to the protection of these species and their habitat.

The forests of Cameroon are also home to the rare Western Lowland Gorillas,  along with many other endangered and critically endangered species. You will hopefully encounter many Gorillas and other rare Apes on this safari.
