    Hunting in South Africa

Referred to as “A world in one country”, South Africa is the leading destination when hunting in Africa. South Africa offers a wide variety of landscapes, from the Drakensburg mountains, open savannas to the bush-veld of Limpopo and the Eastern Cape.

While the majority of ranches in South Africa are high-fenced and privately owned, the countries popularity stems from well regulated hunting practices and some of the best infrastructure in Africa. South African outfitters offer a wide range of accommodation, from five-star lodges to luxury safari tents.

For hunters traveling with companions and family, South Africa has an endless list of non-hunting activities including the Cape Winelands, deep sea fishing, exploring the Garden Route, Shark cage diving, miles of beaches and so much more. Choosing to hunt in South Africa is a seamless blend where  luxury, adventure and wildlife come together.  Besides Africa’s Big Five, South Africa is renowned for its incredible variety of plains game species.

    Hunting in the Northern Cape

The wildlife ranch is situated in the Northern Cape Province, the most sparsely populated province in South Africa, offering hunters open areas of savanna and large desert landscapes.

The Northern Cape is one of South Africa’s prime hunting destinations, offering a variety of challenging hunts, including dangerous and plains game. Iconic desert species include Gemsbuck (Oryx), Springbuck, Red Hartebeest and Black Wildebeest. For hunters focused on the tiny ten, Common Duikers and Steenbok are plentiful.

A combination of dry conditions and challenging terrain provide the perfect backdrop for hunters seeking an adventurous African hunting safari.

    Traveling for the Hunt

Arriving at Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, hunters will need to take a domestic flight from Johannesburg to Kimberley Airport, marking the start of your African hunting adventure. Return flights to/from Kimberly cost on average US$ 200, depending on the season and take an hour and fifteen minutes travel time.

Depending on the arrival time of the inbound flight into Johannesburg, a overnight stay in Jhb may be needed before embarking on the domestic flight to Kimberly. We would recommend African Sky Boutique Hotel, situated in close proximity to the airport specifically catering for international hunters, providing transfers and assistance with firearm import permits. Should any additional information be required, see “Affiliate Services” below in the listing.

Arriving in Kimberly, you will be met by Jaco or a member of his team for the scenic road transfer to the hunting lodge. As you travel through South Africa’s varied landscapes, you will see rolling hills and expansive areas of savanna.

Ultimate Luxury on this Hunting Safari

Arriving at the hunting lodge, you will be greeted with five star amenities designed for comfort. You will have access to private lounges and dining areas, en-suite bathrooms, Wi-Fi, television, air conditioning, and cozy fireplaces. The lodge also features a Spa showcasing a variety of treatments, fully equipped gym and swimming pool.

Experience five-star accommodations in luxury villas, each offering plenty of space for multiple guests. Enjoy gourmet dishes that showcase Africa’s finest cuisine, from sumptuous venison dishes and local favorite cuisine, paired with world-famous quality wines.

Non-Hunting Activities on the Wildlife Ranch

The five star lodge has a variety of activities including bush walks, horse safaris,  visits to the “Rhino Nursery”, clay pigeon shooting and game drives.

The ultimate Cape Buffalo Hunt in Africa!

The Northern Cape of South Africa provides stunning scenery and thrilling adventures, ideal for dangerous game hunting enthusiasts. This safari promises an extraordinary hunting adventure, with the opportunity to hunt a “big Dagga Boy” over 42″. Accompanied by your professional hunter and team of trackers, you will navigate through the diverse landscapes from the rolling savanna’s to the rugged terrain.

Approaching a Cape Buffalo requires skill and caution and shot placement will be crucial; as a precise shot ensures a swift and humane kill.

If not, be prepared, as tracking a wounded Cape Buffalo is dangerous work. They say it takes one perfectly placed bullet to kill a Cape Buffalo, and another 5 to 8 to convince the Buffalo that he is fact dead. On a Cape Buffalo hunt, there is no such thing as “too much gun.”

    The Hunt for “Exotic" Antelope

Included in this combination hunt is an impressive list of plains game hunting species, both trophy Sable (The Prince of Africa) and Roan antelope.Roan are known for their striking appearance and elusive nature, making them a prized trophy. Sable, with their elegant horns and sleek coats are one of Africa’s most beautiful antelopes, also known in Afrikaans as a “Swart Witpens”. Their natural habitat is the open woodlands and savannas, where their dark coats stand out against the landscape.

Cape Eland, the  largest of the African antelopes, presents its own unique challenges. These majestic animals are known for their size and agility and are difficult to track through the dense thickets. Once spooked, Eland can cover many miles in just a few minutes.

    Rhino Hunt “Green Dart”

Participating in a Rhino darting operation is a privilege and no less dangerous than a traditional Rhino hunt. Rhino darting involves tracking and temporarily immobilizing a Rhino for veterinary care, tagging and DNA “swabbing”. This experience highlights the importance of conservation in African hunting.

Rhinos have an acute sense of hearing helping them to compensate for their poor eyesight. Taking into account the wind direction, along with the ability to stalk quietly is going to be paramount to your success. Shots will be fired at less than thirty yards. This is dangerous game hunting at its finest. Hunters will be able to practice using the dart gun before the actual Rhino hunt.

The best time to go on a dangerous game hunt in South Africa?

While South Africa has a regulated hunting season, ranch owners in possession of a P3 Exemption certificate may hunt throughout the year. The best time to hunt in South Africa, is from April to October being the cooler and drier months.

In the winter months, there is less vegetation which improves visibility and general hunting conditions. In the summer months, temperatures can exceed 104 Fahrenheit which can be really unpleasant.
