Hunting Black-Backed Jackal In Africa

This Specialty Animal is Well-Suited for Game Hunters Wanting a Challenging Night Adventure

The black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) is also known as the silver-backed jackal and is found in the eastern and southern African regions. For those planning a hunting safari, black-backed jackals are native to and found in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe as well as the eastern coastline of Africa from Ethiopia to Kenya. The black-backed jackal has no major conservation threats to the species.

The black-backed jackal is one of the few monogamous mammals that mate for life and they live singularly or in pairs. Breeding happens annually between June and August with a gestation period of around 60 days after which a litter of between one and six pups are born, between August and October. Both the male and female parents partake in rearing and feeding the young and social units usually consist of the parents and their offspring.

They are mostly nocturnal, very quick, and evasive which makes targeting them on a game hunting safari even more challenging for the hunter.

These jackals are omnivores and feed on a variety of invertebrates including beetles, crickets, termites, grasshoppers, spiders, and scorpions. They feed on numerous mammals, such as rodents, hares, and young antelopes as well as carrion, birds, lizards, and snakes. Black-backed jackals are opportunistic hunters known to hunt in packs to bring down the larger prey. They bite at the ankles and genitals of their prey and even go for their throat. Black-backed jackals can also hunt alone or in mated pairs.

Adult black-backed jackals don’t have many natural predators, apart from leopards and African wild dogs. Their pups, however, are quite defenseless against predators such as the African wolf, honey badgers, the spotted hyena as well as the brown hyena.

Hunting The Black-Backed Jackal

The Medium-Size Black-Backed Jackal is Nocturnal, Fast, and Evasive.

Size and Appearance

When targeting the black-backed jackal on a game hunting adventure, look for its most distinguishing feature the black hair running from the back of its neck down to its tail. The rest of its fur is mainly reddish-brown to ginger color shades, with the undercarriage of the animal ranging from white to a rusty-white color. Their faces are small, with bushy tails and long ears that stand upright. They weigh 11-26 pounds with their bodies 27-33 inches in length and their large tail measuring 10-14 inches long.

Hunting Methods

If your hunting safari is specifically aimed at the black-backed jackal, the hunt will be a nocturnal game hunting adventure using spotlights, since they are way more active at night. Another way of hunting them is to make use of predator calls. As mentioned previously, hunting these jackals is not an easy expedition, as they are mostly nocturnal, extremely fast, and very elusive.

Challenges and Rewards

In folktales, jackals are often depicted as being sly, calculating, and rather mysterious. This is quite true, as hunters are challenged with an animal that has the means to slip away easily into the night, is extremely fast, and is known as being smart and cunning in its plan to both evade predators and hunt prey. It does, however, provide for an exciting and captivating night-hunting adventure for all involved! The reward of capturing this elusive target would be a great trophy and major bragging rights with fellow hunting enthusiasts!

Rifles and Requirements

A small rifle in the .22 to .25 caliber for jackal hunting in Africa will work perfectly. These critters appear and move at such speeds, day or night, that whatever you have on hand will have to do. This would normally be your plains game rifle fitted with an excellent quality tactical scope.
