    History of Hunting in Botswana

For many years, Botswana was one of the top big game hunting destinations in Southern Africa, showcasing incredible populations of game such as Elephant, Lions and Leopards, including Cape Buffalo, Aka Africa’s Black Death.  Botswana boasted a wide variety of African plains game. These antelope inhabited Botswana from the Okavango Delta to the scenic and magical Kalahari Desert.

In 2013, the Botswana government issued a ban on all hunting activities on government and community lands, but fortunately in line with conservation principles the ban was lifted in recent years. Botswana is home to more free-range wild Elephant than any other country in Africa, with Zimbabwe a close second.

    Your African Outfitter

Clive, working closely with his daughter Kim,have been conducting hunting safaris in Botswana as early as 1992. These safaris do not only include plains game hunting, but this team also specializes in Elephant hunting, Leopard and Cape Buffalo hunts, offering some of the finest hunting in Botswana.Working closely with the local San Bushman community, they have a passion for conservation and ethical sustainable hunting. This family outfit has in all covered with a long record of success and producing world-class hunting trophies.

Traveling for the Botswana Hunting Safari

The main point of entry for this hunt is via Maun International Airport. The easiest access to this prime African hunting destination will be via Oliver Tambo International Airport, flying from South Africa. This flight is approximately two hours in duration and really is just a “quick hop” across the border.

Flights from Oliver Tambo to Maun are offered by Airlink, Air Botswana or Cem Air. Depending on the time of your international flight into OR Tambo, overnighting in Johannesburg may be needed. We would recommend African Sky Boutique Hotel, situated a ten minutes from Oliver Tambo International Airport. Management will assist with transfers to/from the hotel and with any firearm permits. For more information see “Affiliate Services” below.

The town of Maun is a mix of modern buildings and native huts and is the 3rd largest city in Botswana. The city is the tourist capital of Botswana, the administrative center of Ngamiland and headquarters for many safari and air-charter operations. Maun International Airport was opened in 1996 and is a also a gateway into Namibia with flights to the town of Katima Mulilo. The name Maun was derived from the San word “maung”, translated to “the place of short reads”. Maun is also the gateway to for tourists visiting the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve.

The Plains Game Hunt in Botswana

As the hunting area is so large, four by four vehicles may be made use of to cover more ground. A typical day hunting will be up early and departing after a fantastic African styled breakfast.

Once a trophy animal is identified, fair chase hunting principles will apply. Identifying potential trophies will be done by glassing the hills and surrounding landscapes. You and your professional hunter will then decide on the best method of stalking and commence the hunt on foot.

Like with all plains game hunting, an understanding of the antelope’s anatomy is required and shot placement is going to be critical. Any thirty-caliber rifle will work well. With the larger spiral horn antelope, a minimum of 180 grain projectile is recommended. We would recommend a 30.06 or 308, A 7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag will also work well, carrying “more punch” and shooting a flat trajectory.

Accommodation while hunting the Kalahari Area in Botswana

The hunting lodge offers spacious fully air-conditioned stone thatched cottages, with en suite bathrooms. Large Meru styled tents are also available with thatched roofs and bathrooms. Your unit will have its own mini-bar, coffee station, in -room safe, and and of course a private veranda with exquisite views of a serene waterhole. The camp also has an Eco-friendly swimming pool, hidden between the trees overlooking a pool frequented by Hippos.

At night you will enjoy the open air lounge and bar, and experience the magnificent starry skies from around the camp fire.

Best to go Plains Game Hunting in Botswana

Botswana has a semi-arid climate, also known as a “Steppe climate”, characterized by low rainfall, but not as low as an area having a “desert climate”.

The colder months run from May to August, where hunters will experience dry temperatures and even frost at night. In the warmer and hotter summer months, from November through to March, temperatures increase creating “humid and subtropical” climate conditions. The summer months are also referred to as the rainy /wet season and in the months of January and February there are often heavy afternoon showers. The best time to go hunting in Botswana will be in the dry season, May to August.
