When planning your African hunt in Botswana, prioritize health by consulting your doctor about recommended vaccinations (Hepatitis A, Rabies and Typhoid) and Malaria Prophylaxis. Malaria can be a significant risk in Botswana, especially in the northern areas such as the Okavango Delta. While Clive and Kim have medical kits on standby, packing a personal kit including your necessary medical provisions is essential (sunblock, contact lens solution, etc.)

Best Time for a Botswana Hunting Safari

The hunting season in Botswana typically runs from April through September, during the cooler and drier months of the year. These conditions provide more comfortable temperatures for tracking dangerous game on foot and generally improve overall hunting conditions throughout the safari season.

During the warmer summer months, high temperatures and seasonal rainfall can increase insect activity, including mosquitoes and ticks, while extended tracking in the heat can be physically demanding. For this reason, most experienced hunters prefer the cooler winter months when conditions are better suited to dangerous game hunting in Botswana.

    Traveling to Botswana

As hunting concessions will vary depending on seasons and species, hunters will either fly into Maun or Kasane. When booking the hunt, these logistics will be finalized.

For hunts at CH8 Buffalo Camp, CT5 Ivory Camp or CH12 Bottlepan Camp: Kasane please fly into Kasane, Botswana. Kasane to CH8 Buffalo Camp is about a one and half hours’ drive. Kasane to CH12 Bottlepan Camp is about a two hours’ drive. Kasane to CT5 Ivory camp is about a three hours’ drive.  For hunts in the Kalahari, NG8, NG9 or NG3 please fly to Maun, Botswana.

Both Maun and Kasane can be reached by regional flight from Oliver Tambo International Airport, flying from South Africa. This flight is approximately two hours in duration and really is just a “quick hop” across the border.  For flights from Oliver Tambo to Botswana, we would recommend Airlink. The flights are on time, affordable and the food is great.  Should hunters need to stay overnight in Johannesburg, we would recommend making use of Africa Sky Boutique Hotel, who offer transfers to/from Oliver Tambo and can assist with firearm permits into South Africa (SAPS 520).

Should you wish to charter a Helicopter or light aircraft to any of the camps it will be easier to arrange the charter from Maun, this is where most of the charter companies are based.

The town of Maun is a mix of modern buildings and native huts and is the 3rd largest city in Botswana. The city is the tourist capital, the administrative center of Ngamiland and headquarters for many safari and air-charter operations.

Maun International Airport was opened in 1996 and is a also a gateway into Namibia with flights to the town of Katima Mulilo. The name Maun was derived from the San word “maung”, translated to “the place of short reads”. Maun is also the gateway to for tourists visiting the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve.

    Leopard Hunting in Botswana

Leopard hunting in Botswana is conducted using traditional bait-and-blind methods in carefully selected areas known for strong Leopard activity. Baits are positioned throughout the hunting concessions and monitored closely with the assistance of experienced trackers and trail cameras to identify mature toms visiting the area.

Once a suitable Leopard has been identified, a blind will be constructed in a strategic shooting position overlooking the bait site. Hunters can then expect long evenings in the blind, often waiting until after dark for an opportunity at a mature trophy Leopard.

During the daytime, hunters and trackers will continue checking bait sites, monitoring Leopard movement, and preparing active hunting areas for the evening hunt. Hunters preparing for the safari are encouraged to review our professional guide to Leopard Shot Placement before arriving in camp

Tips when Leopard Hunting in Botswana

    • Use a minimum caliber rifle of a .375, but larger calibers are recommended for “stopping power”
    • Use good quality expanding bullets that cause maximum “damage”
    • Quality optics are needed that perform well in low-light conditions, such early mornings and early evenings.
    • Wear suitable colored camouflage clothing and protective gear.
    • Be ready and prepared for a quick “back up” shot.
    • Do not shoot a Leopard when it is reaching up for a bait, facing you or lying down.
    • Familiarize yourself with all regulations relating to Leopard hunting in Botswana

    Elephant Hunting in Botswana

Botswana is internationally recognized as one of Africa’s premier destinations for free-range Elephant hunting, holding the largest Elephant population on the continent. Hunting areas within these wilderness concessions regularly produce quality trophy bulls, with tusks in this region commonly averaging around forty-five pounds.

The hunt is conducted on foot using traditional fair-chase hunting methods, often involving long hours of tracking through remote wilderness terrain before opportunities present themselves at close range. Accurate shooting and calm decision-making are essential when hunting thick-skinned dangerous game, and hunters are encouraged to review our professional guide to Elephant Shot Placement before arriving in camp.

Despite Botswana’s substantial Elephant population, annual hunting quotas remain tightly controlled, making these safaris both limited and highly sought after. Hunters interested in securing a quota are encouraged to book well in advance.
