When is the official Uganda Hunting Season?

Hunters can find opportunities year-round in Uganda, but outfitters officially run the hunting season from January to November. You can hunt year-round, although the rainy or wet seasons (April through June and November) create more challenges. Most hunters consider December through April the prime hunting season, when short grass makes spotting game easier.

    Hunting Methods

    • Hunting in Uganda can only be completed during daylight hours; no night hunting is permitted. This makes hunting certain species, such as the hyena, even more challenging.
    • The main hunting methods in the region comprise:
      • Walk-and-stalk: Hunters often use this method when targeting species such as the Uganda Kob, Oribi, Waterbuck, and Hartebeest.
      • Spot-and-stalk: Hunters frequently utilize this traditional hunting method to pursue Buffalo, Bushbuck, Topi, and other game.
      • Papyrus and Swamp Hunting: Hunters use this method when targeting the elusive Sitatunga. Hunters wade through swamps and waterlogged areas in search of the perfect trophy.

Packing Gear for Your Uganda Hunting Safari

Hunting in Uganda means packing for the unexpected on your hunting safari…it’s not like you can visit the drug store around the corner to pick up any supplies that you may have left behind.  When packing for an African hunting trip, one needs to consider essentials versus “nice-to-haves” that would make your life easier.

    Clothing

Check with your African safari outfitter whether daily laundry is included in the package; it usually is. With that in mind, ensure that you don’t overpack for your hunting safari, and if it is not included, pack a small box of hand-washing powder.

At a glance, a suggested clothing list includes:

    • Uganda generally has a warm climate, but nights may be cooler, so pack a warm jacket and a beanie
    • A lightweight rain jacket is always a good addition
    • 2-3 pairs of shorts or long pants. The shorts are great for the summer heat, but the long pants protect against insects, thorns, and general bush terrain
    • Pack 2-3 short-sleeved and/or long-sleeved shirts. Again, the short-sleeved option is great for the heat, but the long-sleeved option will protect against bugs, the sun, and thorns or vegetation. Pack breathable fabrics that are easy to dry.
    • A hat. While some may prefer a peak cap, a wide-brimmed hat also protects the neck from the harsh African sun.
    • 2 pairs of waterproof boots that have been walked in and are comfortable for the Uganda hunting safari
    • Pack 2 sets of casual clothes for relaxing in camp or traveling
    • Sufficient underwear and socks

     Medical Kit and Other Items

While your outfitter will be prepared for large medical emergencies, they are not there to assist with each sniffle or upset stomach.

Herewith a suggested list of items to consider including when planning your African hunting trip:

    Toiletries

    • Basic toiletries: Deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, mouthwash, shampoo, and so forth

    Medication

    • Prescription Medication: Ensure that you have sufficient prescription medication with you. Remember to keep a copy of the script with all your documentation
    • Basic Antibiotic: Ask your doctor for a broad-spectrum antibiotic that you can use, should you become ill
    • For those who suffer from asthma, don’t forget your pump – and a spare one!
    • Should you suffer from diabetes, remember to pack extra insulin.
    • For those suffering from allergies, remember your medication as well.
    • Malaria Medication: Uganda is a malaria area; ensure that you have started your malaria medication before leaving for your African hunting trip.
    • Contact Lenses: Ensure that you have spare lenses, case, and solution. Also, a pair of glasses comes in handy for early mornings and late evenings
    • Eye drops: There is nothing worse than having something in your eye and trying to concentrate on a trophy when your vision is compromised!
    • Plasters: For small scrapes and cuts
    • Antiseptic Cream or Disinfectant: To go with the plasters and small scrapes, and cuts
    • A cortisone cream or tablets….good for insect bites, itching, and rashes.
    • For those with hemorrhoids, do not forget your cream.
    • Tablets for nausea, headaches, and diarrhea. Don’t get caught unawares!
    • Rehydrate sachets: The African sun and heat can be debilitating; make sure that you are ready and able to give your best without being dehydrated.

    Other Items

    • Mosquito protection
    • Tweezers, to get rid of thorns or stings from the day’s hunting
    • Sunblock: The African sun is harsh; be sure to adequately protect your skin. A reminder not to put it on your forehead, as when you sweat, it can run into your eyes, causing major stinging and discomfort.

This is a general list to use when packing for your Uganda hunting safari; personalize it for your specific hunting adventure.

Cuisine on your Uganda Hunting Safari

Hunters are often spoilt for choice on an African hunting safari, with outfitters combining Western cuisine with some traditional African fare.

Your Outfitter may offer you some of these delicacies during your Uganda hunting safari:

    • Matoke: Steamed green bananas served with grilled meat and peanut sauce.
    • Posho: A firm, maize porridge that is served with meat or vegetable stews.
    • Muchomo: South Africa has the braai, Uganda has the muchomo! This delicacy includes a variety of roasted meats, including goat, beef, or chicken, that are often served on kababs or skewers, along with chips or salad.
    • Luwombo: This finger-licking good meal is just another option of traditional Ugandan cuisine. The dish comprises beef, fish, or chicken. Chefs cook this flavorsome stew with an array of vegetables and groundnut sauce. They wrap it in banana leaves before cooking it. This is a very tasty meal, served on special occasion
