No African plains game hunting safari is complete without a little bushpig hunting. Bushpig hunting allows for a fast-paced hunting adventure! In Namibia, one of the best locations to target them is the famous Zambezi region, previously known as the Caprivi Strip, as well as the central and northern regions of the country. The bushpig (Potamochoerus larvatus) is a member of the pig family and closely resembles a domestic pig. This water-dependent animal is adaptable in terms of habitats, including areas such as forests, swamps, bushveld, agricultural areas, mixed scrub, and woodlands, and has adapted to the more arid regions of Namibia as well. These nocturnal hogs are omnivorous, feasting on a varied diet such as bulbs, fruits, insect larvae, plant roots, and vegetables. The most common method of bushpig hunting in Namibia is the baiting method with the animal hunted from a blind, although other methods are also utilized, such as spot-and-stalk. Another method is that the bushpig is simply a trophy of opportunity and is targeted by the hunter then and there as they come across them in the bush. Hunting at night is illegal in Namibia, so hunting under artificial lighting is not an option. Bushpigs are sturdy, with powerful forequarters and coloring that ranges from a dark brown to red-brown, while the ears, face, and mane are lighter colored. Bushpigs have lower and upper tusks that are short, with the upper tusks being smaller and only visible at close range. Its lower tusks reach close to three inches, and both sets of tusks are razor-sharp and used to dig for food and in defense. Adult boars can reach a whopping 330 pounds, but a weight of 130-180 pounds is more common, with sows reaching 99-154 pounds.
Shot Placement for a Bushpig Hunt
Approaching the bushpig may be a challenging task, as it is renowned for its exceptional smell and hearing. Be warned that it can also be very dangerous when cornered or wounded, don’t get on the wrong side of those tusks! Avoid high-risk shots such as the head or neck and aim for the vitals of the heart or lungs for a swift and humane death for the animal. One of the best shot placements when bushpig hunting is when the animal is standing broadside: Aim for the bottom third of the pig in the area just above the shoulder and this will target their vital organs.
