Bushpig hunting in Tanzania is a thrilling, fast-paced affair with this African plains game trophy well worth targeting! With the best bushpig hunting in Tanzania to the western half of the country in the wetter regions, you can be sure of a great African hunt! Bushpigs (Potamochoerus larvatus) are often hunted as part of an African plains game hunting package, allowing the hunter to target an array of animals during their hunting safari, ending with a multitude of differing game hunting trophies. While bushpigs are best hunted at night, night hunting is illegal in Tanzania. These trophies are however still active during the day, allowing the hunter many opportunities to target them and, in fact, sometimes even becoming an opportunistic hunt should the hunter encounter them while on a safari targeting a different species! One of the most common methods of bushpig hunting is the baiting method with the bushpig hunted from a blind, although other methods such as spot-and-stalk, or as mentioned, even a trophy of opportunity. As a member of the pig family, the bushpig closely resembles a domestic pig. Boars weigh 130-180 pounds, with females tipping the scales at 99-154 pounds. There have been some exceptionally large bushpigs encountered, weighing close to 330 pounds, but this is not the norm. They have light faces, manes, and ears and range in color from red-brown to dark brown. Both sexes have two sets of razor-sharp tusks, with the upper tusks being quite a bit smaller and only noticeable at close range. The lower rusks grow longer, up to three inches. Bushpigs are water-dependent mammals with a varied diet including roots, fruits, vegetables, carrion, insect larvae, and bulbs. They are highly adaptable in terms of habitats and are found in areas such as dense forests and swamps, woodlands, and mixed scrub. They are seen as a species of least concern by the IUCN.

Shot Placement for a Bushpig Hunt
Bushpigs can be a challenge to approach during a stalk, as they are known for their excellent sense of smell and good hearing. When bushpig hunting in Tanzania, aim for an ethical and humane kill, by ensuring that you target the vitals and that your shot placement is good. Try to avoid high-risk shots such as head and neck shots. If injured or cornered, bushpigs can become quite aggressive and dangerous. When the animal is standing broadside, aim for the bottom third of the pig, just above the shoulder, as this will target the heart and lungs.
What Caliber Rifle is Used When Hunting Bushpigs
