This was an incredible Cape Buffalo hunt in the province of Marromeu. The area is desolate and truly wild and “Old Africa” with healthy populations of Buffalo. The herds have recovered since the years of civil war, thanks to contributions made by international hunters.
We travelled to Mozambique by private charter, leaving from Lanseria Airport in South Africa. I recall our pilot following all the correct radio protocol procedures which went on for what felt like eternity, just to hear OK!! from Mozambique air traffic patrol. It was humorous at the time, quantifying how little regard there is for following procedures.
The hunt was tough with ground having to covered on foot in this swampy area. When dangerous game hunting in this area, you will cover fifteen to twenty-five miles a day. Getting close to the Buffalo is a challenge as the area is just flat marshland.
You need to look out for the flocks of birds circling the skies and they tend to follow the buffalo herds, just like when on a deep-sea charter seeking out game fish.
The cut grass is also not pleasant, as you pass through it, well it cuts you. Arms, legs, clothing, you name it.
Having been prepared to shoot my Buffalo at forty yards, we ended up taking the first shot at over two hundred yards with my .458. Well, it can be categorically stated that I missed the first Cape Buffalo, a fact that my kids love to remind me of occasionally.
Following a wounded Cape Buffalo in the thick grass is one of the most exciting adrenaline filled experiences that as a hunter you can do. Dangerous game hunting does not get much better than Cape Buffalo hunting in Marromeu, Mozambique.
