This safari in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa was intended to be an exotic plains game hunt for Giraffe. Unfortunately, on our arrival we were advised that there were problems with the Giraffe permits that should have been issued by the regional offices of nature conservation before our arrival.
So, we decided that there was no use complaining, rescheduled the Giraffe hunt and made the best of a bad situation. We had already travelled six hours.
The Reserve in which we hunted covers an area of more than 50 000 acres situated around the Jozini Dam, which is filled with Hippos, Crocodiles and Tiger Fish. Cape Buffalo and an abundance of plains game traverse the reserve, with Elephants migrating to and from Mozambique.
The Jozini Dam also has a few house boats that can accommodate approximately twenty guests.
The kids just cannot resist a “big pig” and there were plenty of “tuskers” in the area. Unfortunately, Slade was “out” with a broken shoulder from Rugby, and Logan was thus in his element. Slade at least still managed to land a small Tiger Fish. Tamlyn missed a few pigs that were fleeing across the grassland areas but ended up with a nice little sow for her trouble. Apparently, Warthog hunting is not a favorite hunting activity of Tamlyn’s.
Logan was up at the crack of dawn every day, setting out on foot with the professional hunter. Having missed one, Logan still managed six all in all. Two of these were huge trophy pigs. The warthog tusks in this area of South Africa do tend to get bigger due to the softer sand which does not eat away at the tusks while the pigs dig up the vegetation.
The accommodations were great, new wooden log cabins with stunning views of the early sunrises over the Dam. Warthog hunting in this area of South Africa is fantastic and packed with trophy Warthogs.
