Their coats range from red-brown to dark brown, with lighter manes, ears, and faces. Both boars and sows have tusks, with the upper tusks being smaller and only really visible upon closer inspection. The lower tusks are longer and can reach up to three inches in length. Their tusks are razor-sharp and are used in both defense of this highly territorial animal as well as in digging and foraging for food. Bushpigs are seen as a species of least concern by the IUCN.

The correct shot placement will allow for a humane and quick death of the animal, and an ethical hunting safari. Bushpigs can be a challenging hunting safari, as they are renowned for their keen sense of smell and their excellent eyesight, making the stalk and approach a test of skill, patience, and perseverance. As the animal stands broadside, aim for the bottom third of the pig, just above the shoulder. This area will target the vital organs of the heart and lungs.
