When you consider hunting in Zimbabwe, the diverse range of wildlife available to hunt is awe-inspiring. Hunters are spoilt for choice with dangerous game, African plains game, and specialty game hunting opportunities at their fingertips. One iconic and beautiful African plains game species is the impala (Aepyceros melampus), of which the subspecies of the Southern impala (Aepyceros melampus melampus) is found in Zimbabwe and available on a hunting safari. The impala is a wary, vigilant antelope that is renowned for its superb hearing ability and keen eyesight. These two characteristics ensure that stalking this antelope is a challenging, yet rewarding, hunting adventure. The impala is more active during the early morning and late afternoon when it is cooler, and they venture out to forage for food and water. This is also the best time to target them on an African hunt. Tipping the scales at 110-160 pounds, the impala’s reddish-brown coat and white underbelly make for a striking and majestic trophy. Impala also have a distinctive stripe running down their tail near the bottom, and vertical black stripes on the back of their thighs. Males of the species have lyre-shaped horns that reach 16-35 inches.
Available Impala Hunts
Impala hunting is a challenging hunt and is usually undertaken by either hunting the animal from a blind near a waterhole as they are water-dependent and drink daily, or the herd is stalked until the hunter is close enough to take a shot. While this may sound quite simple, impalas have a keen sense of smell and very good eyesight, which as a herd bodes them well in keeping a lookout for predators, such as lions, leopards, wild dogs, and yes, hunters. Impala hunts are available throughout the country, as the antelope is widely dispersed throughout the region.
Shot Placement on an Impala Hunt
When one considers shot placement, less is more. Stay away from head and neck shots and concentrate on targeting the vitals, which will result in a quick and humane death for the animal. Aim for the bottom third of the antelope, just behind the shoulder and this shot will then target the lungs and heart.
What Caliber Rifle is Used for Hunting Impala?
Hunters can consider a 7mm to a 30-caliber rifle that will get the job done with minimum fuss. Another option would be a .22, but a reminder here that shot placement for this animal is paramount, especially with this caliber rifle. Bow hunting is legal in Zimbabwe but chat with your African outfitter for more information about regulations surrounding bow hunting in Zimbabwe.
