African plains game hunting adventures are just one of the many available options when it comes to hunting in Zimbabwe. A destination featuring a diverse range of abundant wildlife and hunting options, hunters are spoilt for choice. One choice definitely worth considering is a sable hunt in the region. Four subspecies of sable (Hippotragus Niger) are recognized, of which the southern sable (Hippotragus niger niger), or the common sable is native to Zimbabwe. With sable hunts available throughout the year, the best time to enjoy this African plains game safari is during the dry season, from May to August, when the vegetation is shorter, the weather cooler and the animals are more likely to gather around water holes. While sable hunting in Zimbabwe is available throughout the country, the Matetsi region is renowned for exceptionally good quality trophies. Sable hunts are best undertaken early in the morning, or late afternoon when the animals are foraging. Sable hunting is an exciting hunt that requires a great deal of patience and perseverance on the part of the hunter, as these antelopes are known to be wary and vigilant, making the approach quite challenging. This regal, yet wary antelope, tips the scales at 550 pounds for a male, with the females weighing 490 pounds. They are renowned for their beautiful, shiny coats that range in color from rich brown to deep black, with a white underbelly. Their faces have white and black markings. But it is their long, arched, ringed horns that are their crowning glory. Both sexes have horns, which can reach 32-65 inches for males, and between 24-40 inches for female sable. Sable hunting in Zimbabwe is either undertaken as a walk and stalk, or the antelope is ambushed from a blind that has been set up close to a well-frequented water hole.

Shot Placement for a Sable Antelope Hunt
The hunter needs to consider his shot placement carefully, to ensure a quick and humane death for the animal. Avoid high-risk head or neck shots that could damage the trophy. When standing broadside, aim for the bottom third of the body, where the front leg joins the body, just over the shoulder area. This shot placement is concentrated in the vital organs of the heart and lungs.
What Caliber Rifle is used when Sable Hunting?
Should the sable hunt be concentrating on shooting from a distance, the hunter can consider options such as a 300-win mag or a .7mm rifle that will get the job done with ease. As the sable is a large African plains game antelope, nothing less than a .270 should be considered on this sable hunting safari. While some hunters may wish to consider thirty caliber options, including the 30.06 or the .308, other options such as a .338 or a .375 loaded with solids will work just as well. Remember, no matter what the caliber, correct shot placement is critical.
