Hunting in Mozambique leaves game hunting enthusiasts spoilt for choice. From dangerous and specialty game to African plains game and African cats, there is definitely something for everyone. But everyone agrees that nothing comes close to the thrill of a fast-paced warthog hunting adventure! The warthog (Phacochoerus) is a popular African plains game hunting trophy, found throughout southern Africa, including Mozambique. Mozambique’s hunting season runs from April to October, with good quality warthog trophies available throughout the country. Remember, in terms of warthog hunting trophies, the bigger, the better! Hunting methods for warthogs include the spot-and-stalk technique, ambushing them from a temporary blind as they head to a water hole to drink, or even an opportunistic hunt where the hunter meets them purely by chance in the bush. Warthogs are more active during daylight hours but will also forage at night if circumstances require. These omnivores survive on a diet of eggs, grasses, insects, fruits, vegetables, carrion, and roots. They are highly adaptable in terms of habitat, but prefer habitats with plenty of water, as well as open busy, woodlands, and grasslands. Apart from their size with adult males being a lot larger than their female counterparts at 340 versus 170 pounds, the easiest way to differentiate between the sexes is to study the warts on their faces. Males have two sets of warts on each side of their face, while females only have one. Warthogs have large heads with two tusks that protrude from under their upper lip, with two smaller teeth on the bottom jaw that mirror the larger upper tusks. Males also have larger and thicker tusks, reaching 10-35 inches compared to 6-10 inches for the females of the species. Warthogs are light brown, with little hair cover and a mane that runs down the spine to mid-back. A distinguishing feature of warthogs is their tails that stand upright as they run, like a little aerial.

Shot Placement when Warthog Hunting
Don’t underestimate how tough these African plains game species are when considering your shot placement. Stay away from head and neck shots, rather concentrating on the hog’s vital organs. From the broadside, aim directly above the front leg, a third of the way up the body. This shot will target the vital organs of the heart and lungs, ensuring a quick and humane death for the animal.
