Hyena hunting in Mozambique is an exciting and thrilling specialty game hunting safari for a hunter seeking a different adversary against which to test their skillset. Usually seen as an add-on hunt to a dangerous game or African plains game safari, the Niassa region in Mozambique is renowned for its great hyena hunting trophies. Mozambique is home to three types of hyenas namely the spotted and brown hyena, as well as the aardwolf. The spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) is renowned for its very distinctive laugh, or cackling calls that resound throughout the bush. It is both the largest and most common of the African hyenas. The brown hyena (Parahyaena brunnea), is also known as the strandwolf (beach wolf) and inhabits southern Mozambique The aardwolf (Proteles cristata), is a termite-eating animal that although it is found in Mozambique, is not commonly hunted in the country and is usually targeted in South Africa and Namibia. Hyena hunts are primarily hunted over bait (popular baiting antelopes include the wildebeest and impala), while the walk-and-stalk method is still used throughout Africa. Hyena hunting safaris are available throughout Mozambique’s hunting season, which runs annually from 01 June to 30 November.
Mozambique is known for its out-of-Africa-type safaris, allowing hunters to experience the Africa of old, with an authentic and adrenaline-filled hyena hunting safari. Mozambique also allows night hunting under spotlights, adding an extra element of excitement to the hyena hunt! When hunting hyena, before approaching your trophy, ensure that it is, in fact, dead before getting too close. An injured hyena is a very dangerous and aggressive animal.
Shot Placement when Hyena Hunting in Mozambique
As with all African hunting safaris, do your homework before heading to Africa and ensure that you know the anatomy of your chosen target for shot placement. While a head or brain shot is not an option as the trophy will be ruined, should the hyena be standing broadside, consider a shot to the shoulder or just behind the shoulder, targeting the vital organs. This will result in a quick and humane death for the animal. Alternatively, should the hyena be quartering towards or away from the hunter, adjust to aim just before or behind the shoulder, again targeting the vitals. Remember, when hunting hyena, the larger the head, the better the trophy.
What Caliber Rifle is used on Mozambique Hyena Hunts?
