    Hunting in Zambia

Zambia’s diverse landscapes and incredible array of wildlife allow hunters to experience a unique and challenging African hunt in the untamed wilderness. The country is renowned for its highly regulated hunting industry, sporting limited quotas and a clearly defined hunting season to ensure sustainability. Zambia is known to produce exceptional trophies for endemic antelope species and other African plains game species.

    The Safari Includes:

    The Outfitter hosting the Hunt

Steven has a wealth of dangerous game hunting experience and operates in numerous territories within Zambia, depending on the target species. As can be expected when hunting in Zambia, outfitters only hunt free-range animals. This is not a fenced-off area, but remote Africa where game traverses freely, allowing hunters to experience the excitement of a traditional African safari experience.

Traveling to Zambia's Southern Hunting Grounds

Hunters will enter Zambia via Lusaka and land at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. A popular route is to fly via Oliver Tambo International Airport in South Africa using airlines such as Airlink, which are affordable. Airlink caters for the transport of firearms. Airlink does need to be notified when purchasing tickets that you will be travelling with firearms, and there is an additional nominal cost involved.

If you are planning to stay overnight in Johannesburg, South Africa, please see our affiliated services link below. African Sky Boutique Hotel provides transfers to hunters, both to and from OR Tambo, and can also assist with rifle permits.

From Lusaka, a 3hr road transfer at a cost of US$1800 will see you arriving at the hunting grounds in the south of the country.

The best time to Hunt in Zambia?

The hunting season in Zambia is from May to December. The best time to hunt is in the cooler and drier months which run from May to October. In saying that, anytime is a great time to enjoy this exceptional hunting destination.

    Logistics, Travel & Preperation

Hunting in Zambia does require a little more back-office administration to ensure everything is 100% before the safari. For first-time hunters exploring Zambia, do not be overwhelmed by the administration and requirements. Steven has been hunting in Zambia for many years, and support will be made available for all queries and administrative assistance.

Tips when Plains Game Hunting in Zambia

    • Hunt during the drier months (May to October), when the vegetation is less, and animals are more likely to gather around waterholes
    • Choose your rifle caliber carefully, with a .270 to a .375 utilized on a plains game hunt, depending on the species
    • Practice shooting from sticks, as this is a very common method used in Africa
    • Do some research and understand animal behavior; for example, the Puku favours floodplains while the Greater Kudu is known for its camouflage skills
    • While researching the species, ensure that you note the best shot placement options
    • Prepare for challenging terrain, with some hunting areas involving waterlogged conditions or thick bush. Therefore, be physically prepared and choose an outfitter familiar with local conditions
    • Wear appropriate hunting gear, including camouflage lightweight clothing, a good hat, and sunscreen, as well as quality binoculars for glassing
    • Keep hydrated as the physical demands of the hunt can be draining
