    Hunting in Zambia

Zambia is renowned for its authentic African hunting experiences, boasting a highly regulated hunting industry with well-defined seasons and limited quotas to ensure sustainability. The destination offers an incredible variety of diverse landscapes, ranging from forests to savannahs, providing hunters with a unique hunting experience.

It is known to produce exceptional trophies for endemic antelope species, as well as regularly producing large Elephant, exceptional Cape Buffalo, and big African cat trophies (Leopard and Lion).

    The Safari Includes:

The Cape buffalo is a tough, cunning, and highly dangerous species, aptly referred to as “Africa’s Black Death” or “The Widowmaker.” Hunting Cape buffalo is a dream hunt for many dangerous game enthusiasts, while Zambia’s endemic Black Lechwe remains a remarkable trophy for African plains game enthusiasts.

    The Outfitter hosting the Hunt

Steven has a wealth of dangerous game hunting experience and operates in numerous territories within Zambia, depending on the target species.

As can be expected when hunting in Zambia, outfitters only hunt free-range animals. This is not a fenced-off area, but remote Africa where game traverses freely, allowing hunters to experience the excitement of a traditional African safari experience.

    Hunting Lodge and Accommodation

Your home in Zambia is tented accommodation, with an en-suite bathroom. WiFi is also available in the camp. There is a central dining and outdoor firepit, the perfect backdrop for a relaxing time in camp and planning the following day's hunting strategy.

Expect hearty, African-themed cuisine during your stay, with your chef easily preparing a Buffalo back-strap grilled to perfection over the open coals.

    Traveling to the Zambia

There aren't any direct flights from the US to Zambia. One of the easiest routes to take for hunters is to fly from South Africa to Zambia, flying into Livingstone Airport, with daily flights available from Cape Town and Johannesburg. There are numerous airlines available, including Airlink that caters to the transport of firearms. Airlink does need to be notified when purchasing tickets that you will be travelling with firearms, and there is an additional nominal cost involved.

If you are planning to stay overnight in Johannesburg, South Africa, please see our affiliated services link below. African Sky Boutique Hotel provides transfers to hunters, both to and from OR Tambo, and can also assist with rifle permits.

The hunting grounds are situated around 40 minutes from the airport, via road transfer.

    Logistics, Travel, and Preparation

Hunting in Zambia does require a little more back-office administration to ensure everything is 100% before the safari. For first-time hunters exploring Zambia, do not be overwhelmed by the administration and requirements. The outfitter has been hunting in Zambia for many years, and support will be made available for all queries and administrative assistance.

    Zambian Health and Requirements

    • A Yellow fever vaccination certificate is a requirement.
    • Zambia and the Rufunsa Concession are malaria areas. Taking the necessary precautions is essential. Your local physician will assist.
    • A tetanus shot, while not a requirement, is suggested when traveling in Africa.
    • As with any other African safari, it’s suggested to request a general antibiotic from your physician. On a Cape Buffalo hunt, you're going to need to bring your A-Game!!

Cape Buffalo Hunting Methods & Shot Placement

    • Most Zambian hunts are classified as “safari style,” which works well with the wild, untamed African destination
    • Members of the hunting party will set out in a 4×4 vehicle to search for the Cape buffalo and spoor
    • Once tracks are spotted, the tracker and team will then set off on foot, using the walk-and-stalk method
    • Ensure that your fitness levels are good, because when dangerous game hunting, you need to be prepared for anything…including long walk-and-stalks, as well as a Cape buffalo charge – this member of the Big 5 is known for its cunning and unpredictable nature…be ready for anything!
    • At the end of the day, it is your shot placement that remains critical. Learn all you can about shot placement for Cape buffalo, and ensure that you are familiar with and comfortable with your chosen rifle
