    Hunting in Zambia

Zambia remains one of Africa's most authentic safari destinations, offering hunters access to vast, unfenced wilderness areas where wildlife moves freely across remote hunting concessions. For those interested in hunting in zambia, the country is renowned for its strict quota management, professional hunting standards, and commitment to sustainable wildlife conservation.

The country's diverse habitats range from floodplains and river systems to dense woodlands and open savannahs, creating ideal conditions for both dangerous game and plains game hunting. Zambia has earned a reputation for producing exceptional Cape Buffalo trophies while remaining one of the few destinations where hunters can still experience a traditional safari in truly wild country.

    The Safari Includes

    • 1 x Cape Buffalo
    • 1 x Black Lechwe

The Cape Buffalo is widely regarded as one of Africa's most respected dangerous game animals. Known for its strength, resilience, and unpredictable nature, it has earned nicknames such as "Africa's Black Death" and "The Widowmaker." For many hunters, pursuing a mature bull on foot represents the ultimate dangerous game challenge, and buffalo hunting in zambia remains one of the country's most sought-after safari experiences.

Complementing the cape buffalo hunt is the opportunity to pursue the Black Lechwe, one of Zambia's most distinctive antelope species. Found primarily in the country's floodplain ecosystems, the Black Lechwe is highly sought after by collectors of unique African plains game and adds a distinctly Zambian element to this safari package.

    The Outfitter

Steven has extensive experience guiding dangerous game safaris throughout Zambia and operates across several hunting areas depending on species availability, quotas, and seasonal conditions. His experience hunting Cape Buffalo and other dangerous game species allows hunters to benefit from local knowledge, professional guidance, and a well-organized safari from arrival through to departure.

As expected when hunting in Zambia, all hunting takes place on free-range wildlife in large, unfenced concessions. There are no high fences or artificially managed hunting areas. Wildlife moves naturally across vast tracts of wilderness, creating the type of authentic African safari experience that has drawn hunters to Zambia for generations.

    Hunting Lodge and Accommodation

Accommodation is provided in a comfortable tented safari camp designed to place hunters close to the hunting areas while still offering the amenities required for an enjoyable stay. Each tent includes an en-suite bathroom, comfortable bedding, and access to camp facilities, including WiFi when available.

The camp serves as the central hub of the safari, where hunters can relax around the firepit after a day in the field, share stories from the hunt, and prepare for the following day's tracking and hunting activities.

Meals are prepared by the camp staff and typically include a combination of local cuisine and traditional safari fare. Fresh game meat often features on the menu, providing hunters with an authentic taste of Africa after a successful day in the bush.

    Traveling to Zambia

Most international hunters travelling from the United States or Canada reach Zambia via Johannesburg, South Africa, before connecting to Lusaka. Daily regional flights operate between Johannesburg and Lusaka, making travel relatively straightforward for visiting hunters.

Hunters travelling with firearms should notify their airline in advance and ensure all firearm documentation is completed before departure. Airlines servicing these routes are experienced in handling hunting rifles and ammunition, although specific procedures and fees may apply.

For hunters planning an overnight stay in Johannesburg, several safari-focused accommodation providers offer airport transfers, firearm permit assistance, and secure rifle storage facilities.

Upon arrival in Lusaka, hunters will be met by the outfitter and transferred to the hunting area. Transfer times vary depending on the exact concession and camp location, but road transportation is arranged as part of the safari logistics.

    Logistics, Travel, and Preparation

One of the reasons many hunters enjoy hunting in zambia is that the country still offers a genuine safari experience in remote wilderness areas. While travelling to Zambia requires slightly more preparation than some African destinations, the process is straightforward when working with an experienced outfitter.

First-time visitors should not be intimidated by the administrative requirements. Your outfitter and professional hunting team will assist with the necessary documentation, travel planning, firearm import procedures, and pre-safari preparation to ensure a smooth arrival and hunting experience.

    Health and Requirements

Before travelling, hunters should consult their physician or travel clinic regarding recommended vaccinations and preventative medications.

    • A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be required depending on your travel route.
    • Zambia, including many hunting areas, is considered a malaria-risk region. Appropriate preventative medication should be discussed with your physician.
    • A current tetanus vaccination is recommended.
    • Many hunters also travel with a general antibiotic prescribed by their physician as part of their standard safari medical kit.

As with any international hunting trip, ensuring that all health requirements are addressed before departure allows you to focus on the hunt rather than administrative details.

Cape Buffalo Hunting Methods & Shot Placement

Most buffalo hunting in Zambia follows the traditional safari-style approach that has made African dangerous game hunting famous throughout the world. Days often begin before sunrise, with the hunting team using vehicles to search for fresh buffalo spoor and locate promising hunting areas.

Once suitable tracks are found, the real hunt begins. Hunters, trackers, and professional hunters continue on foot, following spoor through the bush in search of a mature bull. Depending on conditions, this can involve several hours of tracking through thick cover, woodland, and riverine habitat.

Because Cape Buffalo are powerful, intelligent, and sometimes unpredictable animals, hunters should arrive with a reasonable level of fitness and be prepared for long periods of walking in challenging terrain.

When the opportunity finally presents itself, nothing is more important than proper shot placement. Every hunter should spend time studying shot placement for cape buffalo before the safari and ensure they are completely familiar with their chosen rifle, ammunition, and shooting capabilities. Good preparation before the hunt often makes the difference between a straightforward recovery and a difficult tracking job.

    Why Consider This Hunt?

Zambia remains one of the last destinations where hunters can still experience a traditional African safari in vast, unfenced wilderness areas. The combination of Cape Buffalo and Black Lechwe offers a uniquely Zambian hunting experience, pairing one of Africa's most respected dangerous game animals with an endemic antelope species found in only a handful of regions.

For hunters seeking authentic dangerous game hunts, Zambia delivers the challenge of tracking buffalo on foot through wild country, guided by experienced professional hunters and trackers who spend their lives in the bush. Combined with comfortable safari accommodation, well-managed hunting areas, and exceptional trophy quality, this safari represents one of the most rewarding dangerous game opportunities available in Africa today.
