On a previous safari while hunting Hippo in Namibia, we were sitting around the campfire, beer in hand and starting chatting about giant Nile Crocodiles, and how large Salt Water Crocs in Australia grow to. Unfortunately, there are no tags for these Crocodile hunts in Australia.
Our PH started to reminisce about Crocodiles they had previously hunted in Mozambique. Having data roaming, we quickly Googled a few of the previous trophies that were taken. Seeing the size of these prehistoric lizards hanging and being measured, we just knew we had to head out off to Mozambique and try get ourselves a giant Crocodile.
South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia have some big crocs, but not as big as on Lake Cahora Bassa. Tanzania has some huge crocodiles, but disappointingly a crocodile hunt in Tanzania is a little too expensive for our wallets. Safari hunting in Tanzania is on the higher end and does not come at a discount
Crocodile hunting on Lake Cahora is quite a challenge. It is not as easy as creeping up to a 100-year-old monster and placing a bullet in the head. These giant crocodiles are alert and dangerous. One of the biggest concerns when hunting Crocodile is that the Crocodile, in its death spasms will wiggle back into the water, gone forever.
Travelling to Mozambique is safe and we flew out of OR Tambo International Airport in SA, via Airlink and landed in the province of Tete. We overnighted on the shores of the lake before travelling to the hunting grounds by speedboat. The trip takes about two hours. The scenery is spectacular, rolling hills covered in thousand-year-old Baobab trees.
We shot two giant Crocodiles on this safari, measuring 15,1 and 14,9 feet. Both trophies. A crocodile hunting safari in Mozambique is highly recommended. Looking forward to going back for a Hippo at some point.
