Monster Crocodile Hunting On Lake Cahora Bassa in Mozambique

    ABOUT THE EXPEDITION

On a previous safari while hippo hunting in Namibia, we found ourselves sitting around the campfire late one evening discussing giant Nile crocodile hunts and the incredible size that large saltwater crocodiles in Australia can reach. Unfortunately, crocodile hunting in Australia is not possible, which naturally shifted the conversation toward Africa’s legendary Nile crocodiles.

Our professional hunter began sharing stories about previous crocodile hunting safaris in Mozambique, particularly around the famous Lake Cahora Bassa. Before long we were searching through old trophy photographs online and seeing massive prehistoric-looking crocodiles hanging from skinning sheds. At that point we knew we had to experience crocodile hunting in Mozambique for ourselves.

While South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia all produce respectable Nile crocodiles, hunting in Mozambique, especially on Lake Cahora Bassa has built a reputation for producing some of the largest crocodiles in Africa. Tanzania also offers exceptional crocodile hunting opportunities, but safari hunting in Tanzania is considerably more expensive and simply outside our budget at the time.

Travelling to Mozambique was straightforward and far safer than many people imagine. We flew from OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa via Airlink into Tete Province before overnighting on the shores of Lake Cahora Bassa. From there we travelled roughly two hours by speedboat deeper into the hunting area, passing remote shorelines, rugged hills, and enormous ancient baobab trees scattered across the landscape.

Crocodile hunting on Lake Cahora Bassa is one of the most intense forms of dangerous game hunting in Africa. Hunting a mature Nile crocodile is not simply a matter of spotting one lying on a sandbank and taking a shot. These old crocodiles are extremely cautious, highly intelligent, and capable of disappearing into the water within seconds at the slightest sign of danger.

Proper crocodile shot placement is absolutely critical. One of the greatest fears when hunting crocodiles is that the animal may slide back into the water during its final death spasms and disappear forever into the depths of the lake. Patience, steady nerves, and precise shooting become essential when pursuing these giant reptiles.

The safari exceeded every expectation. Over the course of the hunt we successfully harvested two outstanding Nile crocodiles measuring 15.1 and 14.9 feet respectively — both exceptional trophy crocodiles by any standard. Seeing animals of this size up close truly makes you appreciate why crocodiles have remained one of Africa’s most feared predators for thousands of years.

For hunters seeking authentic crocodile hunting in Mozambique, Lake Cahora Bassa remains one of the finest dangerous game safari destinations in Africa. It is an experience we will never forget and one we hope to repeat again someday, possibly returning in pursuit of a giant hippo along the lake’s shoreline.
