Specialty game hunting is addictive. There is always one more specialty animal to target, always one more destination to visit before your specialty game hunting trophies are complete. And with that, comes traveling to different and diverse destinations, including Namibia. Hyena hunting in Namibia ticks both those boxes, with a wide range of specialty game including the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta), the largest of the hyena species, the brown hyena ((Parahyaena brunnea), and the aardwolf ((Proteles cristata) available to hunt in the region. Hyena hunting in Namibia is an exciting and challenging hunting safari, where a predator license is required for your hyena hunt. Namibia’s hunting season runs from 01 February to 30 November, with the best time of year to enjoy a hyena hunting safari being during the dry season, from June – August.
The spotted hyena is prevalent in private areas near both Etosha National Park and the Zambezi region (previously Caprivi Strip). The brown hyena is found in the northern, southern, and central regions, of the region’s desert areas.
Available Spotted Hyena Hunts
Two main hunting techniques or methods are used to target the brown and spotted hyenas on a hyena hunting safari. Firstly, hyena hunts can take the form of a walk-and-stalk where a tracker is used to search for fresh tracks and then, when found, the animal is tracked and stalked. The alternative method is to shoot the animal from a blind. Bait, such as zebra or wildebeest, is used to attract the animal and then the hunters lie in wait, hidden in the blind. The aardwolf is a nocturnal animal that is hunted through walk-and-stalk during daylight hours. Night hunting in Namibia is illegal. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed the brown with a status of “near threatened” while the spotted hyena and aardwolf have a status of “least concern.”
Shot Placement when Hyena Hunting in Namibia
A head or brain shot will surely ruin your game hunting hyena trophy and is not recommended. Rather opt for a shot just behind the shoulder and into the vitals, or a shot on the shoulder should the animal be standing broadside. If the hyena is quartering towards or away from the hunter during the hyena hunts, make the necessary adjustments to aim just before or behind the shoulder and this will soon get the trophy in the salt.
