For hunters bringing rifles into South Africa must complete a SAPS 520 form upon arrival at the airport.

    North West Hunting Grounds

The hunting grounds in the North West province depict the classic South African hunting environment. The region is characterized by open grassy plains, thorny shrubs, and trees, and is generally quite flat, apart from some scattered hills and rocky outcrops.

    Hunting Lodge and Accomodation

Your hunting accommodation is near Zeerust, in the North West province’s Syferfontein region. This beautiful region was selected because of its proximity to the various concessions used during the plains game hunt.

The lodge on this safari sleeps up to 10 people in 5 rooms. Two rooms include en-suite bathrooms, while the remaining three share bathroom facilities. The lodge is fully equipped with running water and electricity and is supported by a backup generator to ensure uninterrupted comfort during power outages.

Hunters can sit back and relax, enjoy blissful evenings under African skies, where hearty meals and engaging conversations are the order of the day.

Tips to Remember when Hunting Kudu in South Africa

    • Also referred to as “King of the Spiral Horns,” the Kudu remains a popular species when hunting in South Africa. This large antelope is renowned for preferring dense bush and mountainous regions, allowing them to easily camouflage themselves and effortlessly disappear into the vegetation
    • They are an exceptionally wary and alert antelope and hunters will have their work cut out to approach them undetected. Hunters should approach slowly, as the Kudu will disappear quickly should they sense any perceived danger
    • This species is more active early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Plan your safari accordingly
    • Do your homework and ensure that your shot placement is accurate. Aim for the bottom third of the shoulder and avoid head and neck shots, as they will ruin this beautiful trophy
    • Ensure that you are comfortable shooting with the rifle caliber you choose. While a .270 may be sufficient to down a Kudu,  a .30 caliber rifle, such as .308 Winchester or .30-06, is also a popular choice and is renowned for its stopping power

     Why hunt in South Africa?

South Africa is seen as being one of the premier game hunting regions in Africa and remains popular with international hunters worldwide. Here are some reasons that keep hunters returning year after year:

    • Firstly, it is easily accessible, with daily international flights landing at one of the country’s three international airports.
    • Domestic flights are reliable and versatile, offering hunters a variety of options to be able to hunt in any of the country’s nine provinces and to reach them with ease. Charter flights are also available.
    • While many African regions have restrictions on the hunting season, hunting takes place throughout the year in South Africa
    • The peak season for hunting in the country is, however, during the cooler months from around May to September
    • While many African destinations can be quite expensive when considering a hunting safari, South African hunts are seen as value for money, with outfitters seen as some of the best worldwide, and South African hospitality being legendary
    • South Africa can offer hunters the best of both worlds: Whether they are interested in a big game safari featuring the Big 5, or perhaps an iconic African plains game hunt, the destination ticks all the boxes in terms of species, variety, abundance, and overall hunting experience
    • South Africa is also the only destination worldwide, apart from Namibia, where all members of Africa’s Big 5 can be hunted
    • Lastly, when the hunting safari is complete, South Africa offers travelers a variety of tourist activities to suit both young and old, therefore proving to be a great African safari holiday for the entire family
