Hunting in South Africa presents a unique set of challenges due to the extreme variation in terrain and hunting conditions. Shooting distances, visibility, and even rifle selection can differ dramatically between thick bushveld, mountain regions, wetlands, and the open plains of the Karoo.
For this plains game hunting safari, we headed to the Karoo Desert region of South Africa, an area well known for exceptional springbuck hunting, gemsbuck hunting, and black wildebeest hunting. The young hunters in our group were accustomed to shooting at distances of roughly 100 yards in thick Limpopo bushveld, so we decided to take them completely out of their comfort zone.
The Karoo landscape is vast and unforgiving. Aside from scattered koppies and rocky outcrops, the terrain is mostly flat and covered in low succulent shrubs and sparse vegetation. Unlike bushveld hunting, where shots are often quick and close, hunting in the Karoo regularly requires accurate shooting at extended distances.
Hunters planning a Karoo hunting safari in South Africa should be prepared for shots well beyond 250 yards, with average shooting distances in some areas ranging from 350 to 600 yards. Understanding your rifle’s ballistic data and spending time practicing at a long-range shooting range beforehand is highly recommended.
Proper plains game shot placement becomes especially important under these conditions. Species such as gemsbuck and black wildebeest are incredibly tough animals and can travel long distances even after a fatal lung shot, often leaving very little blood spoor to follow.
On this African hunting safari, we used a .300 Win Mag loaded with 180-grain Hornady ELD-X bullets, which performed exceptionally well in the windy Karoo conditions.
Aside from the excellent hunting, the Karoo offers spectacular scenery, freezing winter mornings, and unforgettable evenings around the fire. If you are planning a hunting safari in South Africa, the Karoo is highly recommended for hunters looking to experience true long-range plains game hunting.
And of course, no Karoo safari is complete without grilled springbuck backstraps over an open fire at the end of the day.
