There is nothing quite like an Africa plains game safari. It is awesome the variety of animals that are available and we have a family saying on these kind of trips, take “what the bush gives you” which means often on a plains game hunt you take what presents itself
So, our Nyala hunt actually started out as my Giraffe hunt and due to some unforeseen circumstances turned into a pig hunt and then only Nyala.
Our youngest (10yrs) who had not yet at that stage hunted her first animal, decided this was now the weekend for her to hunt. Her brother had already had great success with hunting warthog, so we started her out looking for a nice pig. Murphy’s law though, as soon as we started looking at hunting them they wouldn’t stay still long enough for a novice hunter.
But as the weekend progressed we started seeing some really lovely Nyala bulls and our young novice huntress was confident that she had the shot, and her PH gave her the go ahead. She took one shot, aimed through the back of the head and this enormous Nyala bull was down!!! She made us so proud; he measured in at 28,5” over Rowland ward which is 27”. The tradition in South Africa, when you shoot your first animal, is that you are “blooded”. Blooded means you paint streaks on your face with the blood. Part of this tradition is also to eat some of the raw liver from the harvested animal. A tradition that she followed and to support her, her brothers took part and ate raw liver too. They had already gone through this process when they shot their first animal. Once you have been through this process you don’t actually ever have to do it again so doing it again showing their support for her was a very sweet gesture.
After spending a few hours in very hot conditions, Tamlyn made a superb shot at roughly 60 yards anchoring the bull.
