Hippo hunting in Namibia, if you have never hunted these animals before, is an incredible safari and comes highly recommended. Besides all the adrenaline rush and action, these hippo hunts are affordable, trophies exportable to the USA and UE and the safari makes for an excellent break from all life’s usual stresses.
We travelled into the Zambezi Region (formally known as the Caprivi Strip) via Kasane International Airport from Botswana. Kasane is a great little town and there were Impala walking around the outlying areas. We then proceeded to cross the Chobe River and travelled further upriver motorized canoe. This trip took approximately one and a half hours and was thoroughly enjoyable. It does gets a little tricky maintaining balance, but contrary to our opinion, these canoes do not easily topple over.
Going through passport control, from Botswana into Namibia was no problem. Government offices in these areas were tiny and manned by one person.
The Chobe River forms the border of the Chobe Nature Reserve, and the area is filled with antelope such as Kudu, Puku and Impala, plus many more species. The Chobe Reserve is packed with Elephants, Crocodiles and Cape Buffalo and is a favorite tourist attraction. At least we got to practice Elephant shot placement!
Our biggest challenge on this Hippo hunt was that we ended up going during the wet season. This is not the best time of the year for a Hippo hunt in Namibia. The entire Caprivi was flooded, and the Hippo’s never left the water. The original plan was to hunt a Hippo on land, but we ended up shooting a monster Hippo while in the water from an embankment.
The accommodation was great and the food even better. Our only regret was not booking and hunting a trophy Crocodile whilst enjoying the Caprivi
