Big game hunting: The Greater Kudu

A Nocturnal Herbivore, the Kudu Remains a Great Stalking or Tracking Game Hunting Trophy

The very large greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) is native to Ethiopia, Tanzania, Eritrea and Kenya into the south, while they are found in Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe as wellas South Africa. Kudu hunting in South Africa is extremely popular, with the Limpopo province being an excellent backdrop for a brilliant African kudu hunting adventure!

Many hunters consider kudu hunting in Africa to be the pinnacle of big game hunting in Africa. This majestic antelope is tall and striking and provides a great and daring challenge for anyone willing to target it on a hunting adventure. They are diurnal and more active in the early morning and towards dusk when the weather cools down. Kudus tend to rest and sleep in the shade during the hotter daylight hours. Their habitat includes thick bushveld and semi-desert.

Mating occurs towards the end of the rainy season, which differs according to the region. The female kudu gestates for 8 months, giving birth to one or two calves. Calves are born in a safe, protected environment and hidden for 1-2 weeks.

The greater kudu is a browsing herbivore, eating grass, leaves, flowers, fruits, tubers and shoots from a variety of trees, bushes, grasses, herbs and vines. Their diet enables them to inhabit waterless regions, although greater kudus do regularly drink as well.

Kudu hunting in Africa doesn’t stop with man, although they are highly prized animals and sought for their horns. Predators hunting kudus in Africa include lions, leopards, African wild dogs as well as hyenas. Cheetahs don’t have the strength to take down an adult male kudu and they tend to focus on the old, injured, sick or kudu calves and females.

Greater kudus have excellent hearing and that, combined with their outstanding camouflage behavior, protects them against predators. If they feel threatened or sense danger, they will stand dead still, which makes them extremely difficult to spot.

Although kudus can run up to 43 miles per hour, this isn’t enough to outrun many predators and they cannot maintain this speed over longer distances. Kudus tend to elude them by jumping over obstacles as they can jump as high as 6.5 feet at a time.

Size and Appearance

Before embarking on your big game hunting adventure, ensure that you know how to identify this magnificent beast, that excels at camouflaging itself in the African bushveld. These large African plains game antelope are some of the most superb specimens on the planet! They are tall and striking, with a reddish-brown coat although males also often have a grayish-brown coat. They have narrow bodies and long, muscular legs that are well-utilized when it comes to the huge jumps that they do. Males weigh around 420-600 pounds, with monster specimens being known to reach 700 pounds! Females are smaller and weigh between 250-450 pounds. Only males have horns, which are quite spectacular. The average horn size ranges between 40-50 inches. Males also have a beard and nose markings, whereas a female does not.

Hunting Methods

When hunting kudu in Africa, look for tracks around pans and water holes as they will never be far from water and they drink regularly. They are most active in the early morning or late afternoon and early evening, so ensure that your timing for the hunt is spot on. Remember, if you want an exceptional greater kudu trophy as a reminder of your big game hunting adventure, avoid head and neck shots. Rather concentrate on a heart or lung shot to take them down.

Challenges and Rewards

African kudu hunting safaris can be very challenging, as they are extremely elusive with both excellent hearing and eyesight. If they spot a predator or sense danger, they stand dead still and tend to blend in with the environment, making them very difficult to spot. A great reward, is a kudu with large, intact horns! The size of the horns is everything, and a trophy with a horn size of 60 inches or more, is considered an outstanding trophy!

Rifles and Requirements

A 30.06 is a great caliber for hunting Kudu. The kudu is one of the most sought-after African plains game trophy animals. Do not use a bullet with a weight of less than 150 grain. A .375 right up to a .458 loaded with a solid is also an option. Shot placement as always is critical. For longer shots, a 7mm or 300-win mag is also an option.
