Hunting Black Wildebeest in Africa

The Black Wildebeest is a Large Antelope Endemic to South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho.

If you’re looking at targeting an Africa plains game specimen that will set you a challenge, then the blackwildebeest (Connochaetes gnouis) is right up your alley.

Endemic to South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho, theblack wildebeest should be approached with caution when on a game hunting safari. Known as being grumpy at

times, while downright aggressive at others, together with their excellent senses, make the black wildebeest challenge to hunt and worth considering for your hunting trip in Africa.

The black wildebeest, also referred to as the poor man’s buffalo, is available for hunting in Namibia as well as South Africa. It is listed by the International Union for the Conversation of Nature (IUCN) with a status of “least concern.”

In South Africa, game hunting safaris are undertaken in KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and Northern Cape. The black wildebeest’s chosen habitat includes grasslands, open plants, and Karoo shrublands in mountainous and lower-lying areas.

Mating occurs in March and April, with their offspring born between November and January, after about an 8.5

gestation period. The female black wildebeest gives birth in the middle of the herd and usually in the middle of the day. Calves reach independence at 6 months of age.

There are three distinct social groups relating to the black wildebeests.  These are of importance as you target the males of the species during your hunting trip in Africa:

  • Females herds
  • Bachelor herds
  • Territorial bull herds

Herds consist of 10-60 animals, and they feed and graze during the early morning and late afternoon during the

hotter months. During the day, they will rest and sleep in the shade. When the weather is cooler, they graze throughout the day.

They are herbivorous and eat grass. They may sometimes migrate, due to the availability of grass for feeding.

This Africa plains game species has numerous predators, including lions, leopards, hyenas and Nile crocodiles. Lions

target adult wildebeest while hyenas and leopards focus on the calves.  The Nile crocodile sets its sights on the old, young and sick of the herd and drags them under water where they drown.

Size and Appearance

Also known as the white-tailed gnu, the black wildebeest is a large antelope, with a box-like head and large, curving horns. Their forequarters are well developed and heavily built, while their hind legs are thin and gangly. Their coatis gray, with a black mane, and a white or black beard. Both male and female black wildebeest have horns. A male black wildebeest weighs 355 pounds and stands approximately 44-48 inches at the shoulder. A female black wildebeest weighs around 286 pounds and stands 42-46 inches at the shoulder.

Hunting Methods

When targeting the black wildebeest on your hunting trip in Africa, don’t think that it will be a quick, smooth kill. These beasts have excellent senses and can be aggressive if wounded or disturbed. Most game hunting safaris take the form of walk-and-stalk hunts. Even though you can see the wildebeest on the open plains, the challenge is getting close enough to him to stalk efficiently, due to those excellent senses. Both males and females have horns, and another challenge is to be able to identify a good quality bull trophy.

Challenges and Rewards

The black wildebeest may not be the biggest or fiercest of any African big game animals to target on your hunting trip in Africa but should you be looking for a worthy opponent when plains game hunting in Namibia or South Africa, consider this antelope. The average horn size to aim for is between 20-22 inches, with a 25-inch set of horns being an exceptional reward.

Rifles and Requirements

Black Wildebeest game hunting safaris should not be conducted with any caliber less than .270, at a minimum. Flat shooting .300 magnums loaded with 200 grains to 220 grains are also a good option. A fast-moving 7mm loaded with 165 grain expanding bullets or a 300-win mag with 180 grains can get the job done. The faithful African rifle, the 30.06 loaded with a 180-grain expanding bullet will ensure you take down your perfect black wildebeest trophy.
