Traveling to the Limpopo Province, SA

The Hunting Concession, Messina in Limpopo

    • Limpopo is widely regarded as the best hunting ground in South Africa, with this safari based in Messina, northern Limpopo
    • The hunting grounds are 12,000ha, with African plains game, specialty game, and dangerous game available to hunt
    • The area’s vegetation consists of Mopane bush, Acacia trees, and mixed bushveld, with the Sand River running through the concession
    • The terrain is generally flat, with rocky outcrops and small hills
    • This type of landscape and vegetation provides the hunter with a more challenging hunting experience, testing his skills and ability to adapt his hunting style on the move

The Hunting Lodge in South Africa

After a long day in the African bush, nothing beats coming back to a warm and welcoming retreat, where cold drinks, hot showers, and comfort are the name of the game. The hunting lodge in Messina provides luxurious home-away-from-home accommodation for hunters, offering an array of creature comforts and numerous amenities, including a swimming pool, various lounges, and a fire pit to relax around. From exquisite views to mouthwatering meals, this lodge has it all!

The lodge boasts 6 air-conditioned chalets, all equipped with comfortable beds and en-suite bathrooms. For those wanting to keep in touch with family and loved ones back home, WiFi and cell phone reception are available.

The resident chef provides mouthwatering menu options, and don’t be surprised to see some game meat (venison) from previous hunts incorporated into the menu!

Game Hunting Methods & Rifle Calibers

For those hunters bringing their firearms into South Africa, a SAPS 520 Import Form needs to be completed.

Wildebeest hunting should not be conducted with any caliber less than .270. Flat shooting .300 magnums loaded with 200 grains to 220 grains are the best option. A .308 with a bullet weighing not less than 165 grains can be used, but shot placement is critical. Wildebeest are exceptionally tough and are known for their ability to “eat lead.” The hunter need not be afraid to use something even bigger, such as a .338, .375, or a .416 Rigby.

Why is hunting Wildebeest a Challenge?

    • Wildebeest possess keen senses, which make them difficult to stalk and approach undetected
    • Wildebeest live in herds, and there are many eyes and ears to alert each other to danger
    • Stalking of this tough animal must be slow, regulated, and the terrain used as cover to be able to stalk them undetected
    • Wildebeest are known to be very tough and rarely go down easily. They often put up a strong fight or take a long run after being shot, requiring precision shooting and patience from hunters
    • They are fast runners and can maintain speed over long distances, making follow-up shots and tracking challenging
    • Limpopo’s varied terrain of open plains and dense bush makes hunting the Wildebeest a challenge, with the hunter being required to change his techniques and methods during the safari as needed
    • Long stalks can be physically demanding, especially during the heat of the day
