The hunting lodge near Messina provides a comfortable base throughout the safari, with six air-conditioned chalets featuring comfortable beds and en-suite bathrooms. After a day in the field, hunters can relax around the firepit, spend time in the swimming pool or make use of the lodge’s various indoor and outdoor relaxation areas. WiFi and cellphone reception are available for staying in touch with family back home. The resident chef prepares meals throughout the safari, with venison from previous hunts among the menu options. A traditional South African braai can also form part of the camp experience.
The safari takes place on a 12,000-hectare free-range concession near Musina in northern Limpopo, providing hunters with extensive country in which to pursue the three wildebeest variants included in the Slam. Rather than being dominated by one type of terrain, the concession combines Mopane, Acacia and mixed bushveld with open areas, rocky rises and riverine country along the Sand River. These different habitats influence where wildebeest are found and how hunters can approach them, giving the Professional Hunter several options when planning each stalk. The size and variety of the concession are particularly suited to a dedicated wildebeest hunt, where locating the right animal and setting up the right approach can be just as important as the final shot.

Hunting in South Africa offers exceptional opportunities for plains game hunting, and this safari is built around one of Africa’s most iconic and resilient species. This package gives hunters the opportunity to pursue Blue, Black and Golden Wildebeest during one professionally guided safari in Limpopo, creating the opportunity to complete the Wildebeest Slam in a single hunt.
For hunters looking for dedicated wildebeest hunting in South Africa, this safari combines three distinctive trophies with the varied terrain and free-range hunting conditions of northern Limpopo.
The focus of this wildebeest hunt is pursuing three distinct wildebeest trophies during one 7-day hunt. The package includes Blue, Black and Golden Wildebeest, with a fourth option available for hunters wanting to add a King’s Wildebeest to the Slam.
Hunters can add a King’s Wildebeest to the package for US$5,800.
Wildebeest are exceptionally tough plains game and are well known for their resilience after the shot. Their keen senses, herd behavior and speed can make them difficult to approach, while the strength and endurance of a wounded animal can turn the recovery into a demanding part of the hunt.
Because wildebeest usually move in herds, hunters must contend with multiple animals watching and reacting to movement. A successful stalk requires patience, careful use of cover and close attention to wind direction and terrain. Once a suitable opportunity presents itself, accurate shooting is essential.
The varied Limpopo hunting country adds another layer to the challenge, with hunters moving between open areas and thicker bushveld as they work toward a herd. This combination of wary animals, changing terrain and the physical demands of the stalk makes wildebeest a demanding plains game species to pursue.
Hunters looking to add more species to their safari can pursue additional plains game, subject to available quota. Available species are listed on the drop down menu.

After arriving at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, hunters will take a regional flight to Polokwane Airport in Limpopo. The hunting team will meet hunters there before a short road transfer to the lodge and hunting grounds near Musina.
For hunters planning an African hunting trip, Limpopo offers established hunting operations, varied habitat and access to a wide range of plains game.
Wildebeest hunting requires a patient and methodical approach. Herds can be difficult to stalk because several animals are constantly watching and reacting to movement, so hunters need to make good use of available cover and terrain.
Walk-and-stalk and spot-and-stalk methods can both be used, with the Professional Hunter adapting the approach according to the herd, terrain, wind and shooting conditions.
Hunters bringing their own firearms into South Africa will need to complete the required SAPS 520 firearm import documentation. Wildebeest should not be hunted with a caliber smaller than .270. A .308 can be used with appropriate ammunition, while larger calibers such as .300 magnums, .338, .375 or .416 Rigby can also be considered.
Because wildebeest are exceptionally tough, precise shot placement for large antelope is critical. Hunters should use a caliber they are comfortable shooting accurately and wait for a suitable presentation rather than rushing the shot.
South Africa offers hunters the opportunity to pursue several wildebeest variants within established hunting areas, making it particularly appealing for hunters working toward a Slam. The combination of species variety, diverse terrain and professionally operated hunting areas also allows hunters to build a broader safari around the primary wildebeest trophies.
Hunters can add further plains game according to available quota, giving them the flexibility to extend their safari while continuing to hunt in the same region.
The Wildebeest Slam can be tailored around the hunter’s goals, whether that means adding the King’s Wildebeest, pursuing additional plains game or extending the time spent in Limpopo.
