Hunting in South Africa (Limpopo)

The Limpopo Province, named after the Limpopo River which forms the border between South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The Western region offers a wide variety of scenic landscapes with incredible natural biodiversity. Topography includes valleys and plains, with iconic mountain ranges such as the Soutpansberg and Waterberg mountain ranges. The Limpopo province is also home to the worlds largest and oldest Baobab tree.

Limpopo is referred to a "The Hunting Mecca" of South Africa, attracting more sports hunters than any other region of the country. More than 80% of South Africa’s private hunting and game breeding ranches are situated in the Limpopo Province. High fenced sustainable ranching and game management has led to improved genetics, bigger trophies and has contributed to South Africa’s conservation success story. The famous Mapungubwe Nature Reserve and the northern part of the Kruger National Park are also situated in Limpopo and numerous day trips can be arranged for non-hunting companions on the safari.

The South African Hunting Trip Excludes:

  • All trophy fees, as well as any permit fees required for exporting.
  • Rifle hire and ammunition. Rifle Rental Available @ US $ 50/day (optional)
  • Staff gratuities (at the hunters discretion)
  • Videography Services: Film the hunt for US$ 350 per day (optional)
  • Dip and Pack of trophies.

The Adrenaline-Pumping Bushpig Hunting Challenge

Bushpig hunting  demands patience, precision and of course the ability to stay awake and alert. The excitement hits when the still of the night is interrupted by the squeal of these hogs as they race into the hunting area, fighting over the bait. Hunting in South Africa is an incredible hunting experience, especially when hunting these "night critters".

The Bushpig Hunting Method

Hunting this nocturnal hog will require a variety of techniques. Bushpig hunting will be done by pre-baiting an area. Once the bait has been hit, it will be “game on” from the blind. Once Bushpigs have found the bait, it will be visited every evening by the team of pigs. Bushpigs are known to travel more than ten miles in an evening. While modern day Bushpig hunting is done by making use of a trail cam to record the bushpig activities, it is also common practice to pour bait over a large pile of rocks, thus "locking in the hogs".  After the Bushpigs have fed, the result will be rocks strewn all over the place, which is typical Bushpig behavior.

On the very odd occasion, Bushpigs are sighted during the day feeding on old animal carcasses or in animal “bone yard” areas.

The Plains Game hunt in Africa: Methods

The best time to hunt plains game in South Africa is in the early morning after sunrise or the late afternoon magical hour when the bush “comes alive.” Ridges will be glassed and when the quarry is spotted, the hunt will commence following the walk and stalk method. As this private ranch is so large, four by four trucks may be used to cover more ground.

Transfers to and from the Game Hunting Concession

The hunting adventure will start when you land at Oliver Tambo International Airport. You will be met by Don, your African outfitter and transferred to the safari lodge. The transfer will be a three-hour drive on national tar roads which are in good condition. Be sure to make a stop at the famous Vaalwater Hotel, for a recharge and an ice-cold beverage, or two!!

The transfer is scenic and you will traverse through some of the most incredible landscapes.

The Hunting Lodge in South Africa

No better place to enjoy an African sunset in style.

Safari Hunting Season

South Africa is not regulated by a specific hunting season, plains game and specialty hunts can take place all year around, as ranch owners are allowed to apply for P3 -Exemption permits The best time to hunt in South Africa will be during the cooler months, from April until October. In the summer months, temperatures can exceed 104 Fahrenheit and rain in Limpopo province can continue for days.

Rifle Permits when Hunting South Africa

To apply for a temporary import permit for sport hunting a SAPS 520 form will need to be completed. You will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Don and proof of ownership (Firearm License or Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
