Hunting a Brown Hyena at night is an exciting test of skill and nerve that will push the hunter to their limits, a lack of sleep can become problematic. The nocturnal hunt needs patience and precision and as always, a little luck. Hunting these illusive nocturnal species will require a variety of techniques. Bushpig hunting will be done by pre-baiting an area. Once the bait has been hit, it will be “game on” from the blind. Brown Hyena hunting will also take place using the baiting method. Areas will be “dragged” with fresh baits from antelope hunts, and FoxPro callers may be made use of. Baits for the Civet and Honey Badger, also known by the name “Ratel” will be placed in strategic areas which the hunter and professional hunter will patrol. Artificial lighting will be used to spot these night time predators.
Unlike Spotted Hyena, Brown Hyena do not call, laugh, and giggle. The enter the hunting grounds like a thief in the night.
Incorporating night-vision gear and other advanced technology into your nocturnal hunt brings a whole new level of excitement. Rifles scopes are fitted with night vision and thermal scans are used by the PH to monitor activity.
These tools turn hunting brown hyena and other critters at night into a high-tech hunting adventure. Combine the thrill of traditional hunting techniques with the challenge of mastering modern equipment. This fusion makes each outing a unique test of both skill and innovation.
Your hunting adventure will start when landing at Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. As South Africa is not regulated by a specific hunting season due to outfitters being in possession of P3 Exemption permits. Hyena and other nocturnal hunts can thus take place all year. The best time to hunt in South Africa will be during the cooler months, from April until October. In the warmer summer months, temperatures can exceed 104 Fahrenheit which can make hunting unpleasant. These months also fall into the rainy season, with rain showers that can last for days.
To apply for a temporary import permit for sport hunting a SAPS 520 form will need to be completed. You will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Don and proof of ownership (Firearm License or Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
The temporary import permit allows for hunters to bring a maximum of four rifles, with neither two being the same caliber. No more than 200 rounds of ammunition per caliber.
