    Hunting Methods & Rifle Calibers

For those hunters bringing their firearms into South Africa, a SAPS 520 Import Form needs to be completed.

The best caliber to hunt this large African plains game trophy is the rifle you know best and are most comfortable with. Any caliber, from a well-placed .243 bullet to a .375 or .458 Lott, will get the job done. Choose the rifle you know best, where you are confident that accurate shot placement is a certainty. The Roan antelope is a special trophy; you don’t want to lose it due to poor shot placement!

The Roan is more active in the early morning, and the hunting safari should consider this. Be wary of this African plains game antelope, as it will charge if threatened…and don’t forget about those horns!  When approaching a downed Roan, confirm that they are dead before proceeding too closely. They are known to pretend to be dead and then sweep their heads back, aiming to injure their predator with their sharp backward-curved horns.

Tips when Hunting Roan in South Africa

Hunting this large plains game trophy can be quite daunting. Check out some tips to consider when Roan hunting in South Africa:

    • The Roan is more active early morning or late afternoon, plan the safari accordingly
    • Ensure that your shot placement on this trophy is spot on, a wounded Roan is not only dangerous but will also disappear, leaving you without a prize trophy
    • Glassing from a distance will help locate the herd, but then use spot-and-stalk or tracking methods to hunt the Roan
    • Slow, patient stalking is required as Roans have excellent eyesight and a keen sense of smell
    • While South African hunts are available throughout the year, the best time to hunt is from May to September, when the vegetation is shorter, allowing easier visibility for hunters. The animals are also more likely to gather around remaining water sources during this drier season.
    • Limpopo is the perfect destination for hunters wanting a challenging plains game hunting environment, offering diverse landscapes and testing terrain
    • Be wary when approaching the trophy; they are known for the “playing dead” trick and then sweeping their horns back to injure their predators
    • For added adrenaline, consider hunting this premier trophy using a bow
