Traveling for the hunt in South Africa

The Hunting Concession, Messina in Limpopo

    • Limpopo is widely regarded as the best hunting ground in South Africa, with this safari based in Messina, northern Limpopo
    • The hunting grounds are 12,000ha, with African plains game, specialty game, and dangerous game available to hunt
    • The area’s vegetation consists of Mopane bush, Acacia trees, and mixed bushveld, with the Sand River running through the concession
    • The terrain is generally flat, with rocky outcrops and small hills
    • This type of landscape and vegetation provides the hunter with a more challenging hunting experience, testing his skills and ability to adapt his hunting style on the move

The Hunting Lodge in South Africa

The hunting lodge outside Messina is a true gem in the African wilderness, offering hunters a reprieve from the day’s hunting and a chance to refresh themselves and rest in preparation for another day’s hunting adventures in the bush.

Soft, comfortable beds and warm showers are the order of the day! Hunters will be accommodated in one of the 6 double chalets, which are well-equipped with en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning. For those wanting to keep in touch with family and loved ones back home, WiFi and cell phone reception are available. The lodge also offers firepits, chill areas, and a swimming pool to enjoy after a day out hunting.

The resident chef prepares mouthwatering meal options for guests, served in a dining area overlooking the surrounding veld. Meals may include some venison (game meat) from previous hunts, and a braai (BBQ) is sure to be included during the safari.

Game Hunting Methods & Rifle Calibers

For those hunters bringing their firearms into South Africa, a SAPS 520 Import Form needs to be completed.

A 7mm to 30 caliber range of rifle will ensure a swift, ethical safari and ensure that you don’t spend the day tracking a wounded Impala.

Tips when Game Hunting in Limpopo

Hunting in South Africa remains a sought-after adventure for those seeking to harvest high-quality trophies and experience an unforgettable African safari. Check out some tips when plains game hunting in Limpopo:

    • While hunting in South Africa is available throughout the year, the best time to hunt is from May to September, when the vegetation is shorter, allowing easier visibility for hunters. The animals are also more likely to gather around remaining water sources during this drier season.
    • Limpopo is the perfect destination for hunters wanting a challenging plains game hunting environment, offering diverse landscapes and testing terrain
    • A good level of physical fitness is recommended, as African plains game hunts require a good deal of walking and stalking
    • Trust your PH on the hunt, as he is knowledgeable about local conditions, species, and the environment as a whole
    • Hunting methods for African plains game hunting in South Africa include the walk-and-stalk method, as well as the spot-and-stalk method
    • A suitable rifle to consider when plains game hunting is a .270 upwards, depending on the size of the trophy
    • Take time to research shot placement on your chosen trophies, to ensure a quick and ethical hunting safari
    • Educate yourself about local regulations and required hunting permits and requirements

Why choose South Africa as your next African Hunting Destination?

South Africa is seen as one of the premier game hunting regions in Africa. But what makes this destination so popular? Firstly, it is easily accessible from anywhere worldwide, with daily international flights landing at one of the three international airports. Domestic flights are quick, offering hunters a variety of options to be able to hunt in any of the country’s nine provinces and to reach them with ease, whether by domestic flights or charter flights.

While many regions have restrictions on the hunting season, hunting takes place throughout the year in South Africa, although the peak season is the cooler months from around May to August. While many African destinations can be quite expensive when considering a hunting safari, South African hunts are seen as value for money, with outfitters seen as some of the best worldwide, and South African hospitality being legendary.

South Africa can offer hunters the best of both worlds: Whether they are interested in a big game safari featuring the Big 5, or perhaps an iconic African plains game hunt, the destination ticks all the boxes in terms of species, variety, abundance, and overall hunting experience. South Africa is also the only destination worldwide, apart from Namibia, where all members of Africa’s Big 5 can be hunted (With this being said, no Leopard permits have been issued in quite some time).

Lastly, when all is said and done, the last bullet is shot and the trophies are in the salt, this diverse destination offers travelers great family getaways and holidays, allowing hunters to easily travel with family and other non-hunting parties.
