Game Hunting Methods & Rifle Calibers

For those hunters bringing their firearms into South Africa, a SAPS 520 Import Form needs to be completed.

The best caliber to hunt these large African plains game trophies is the rifle you know best and are most comfortable with. Any caliber, from a well-placed .243 bullet to a .375 or .458 Lott, will suffice. Choose the rifle you know best, where you are confident that accurate shot placement is a certainty. Be sure to do your homework when it comes to shot placement on these large African plains game species for a quick, clean kill.

The Roan and Sable are more active in the early morning, and the hunting safari should consider this. Both these antelopes have beautiful backward-facing horns – and they will use them if threatened. Ensure that your trophy is, in fact, dead before coming too close to it and facing a wound from those sharp horns.

Tips when Plains Game Hunting in South Africa

Hunting these large plains game trophies can be quite challenging, to say the least. We’ve got some tips for you to help harvest these majestic antelopes:

    • They are more active early morning or late afternoon when it is cooler, plan the safari accordingly
    • Do your homework and learn about their behavior and habits, also ensure that your shot placement is accurate
    • Glassing from a distance will help locate the herd, but then use spot-and-stalk or tracking methods to hunt the Sable and Roan
    • While South African hunts are available throughout the year, the best time to hunt is from May to September, when the vegetation is shorter, allowing easier visibility for hunters. The animals are also more likely to gather around remaining water sources during this drier season.
    • Limpopo is the perfect destination for hunters wanting a challenging plains game hunting environment, offering diverse landscapes and testing terrain
    • For added adrenaline, consider hunting this premier trophy using a bow

Take up the challenge of Roan and Sable hunting in South Africa! Don’t miss out on hunting not one, but two of Africa’s most majestic trophies!
