Traveling to Hunt Buffalo in South Africa

Hunters will fly into OR Tambo International Airport, after which they will take a regional flight to Polokwane Airport where they will be met by Dean and his team. After a short road transfer, hunters will arrive at the lodge and hunting grounds, ready for an epic Cape buffalo hunt!

    The Limpopo Hunting Meca

    • Limpopo is widely regarded as the best hunting ground in South Africa. For this hunt, the hunting lodge is based in Messina, northern Limpopo
    • The hunting grounds are 12,000ha, teeming with African plains game, specialty game, as well as dangerous game with the Cape Buffalo freely roaming the area
    • Vegetation consists of Mopane bush, Acacia trees, and mixed bushveld
    • In terms of terrain, the area and surrounds are generally flat, with rocky outcrops and small hills, while the Sand River also runs through the concession and is home to the Nile Crocodile
    • This type of landscape and vegetation provides the hunter with a more challenging hunting experience, testing his skills and ability to adapt his hunting style on the move.

The Hunting Lodge in South Africa

The hunting lodge outside Messina is a true gem in the African wilderness, offering hunters a reprieve from the day’s hunting and a chance to refresh themselves and rest in preparation for another day’s hunting adventures in the bush.

Soft, comfortable beds and warm showers are the order of the day! Hunters will be accommodated in one of the 6 double chalets, which are well-equipped with en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning. For those wanting to keep in touch with family and loved ones back home, WiFi and cell phone reception are available. The lodge also offers firepits, chill areas, and a swimming pool to enjoy after a day out hunting.

The resident chef prepares mouthwatering meal options for guests, served in a dining area overlooking the surrounding veld. Meals may include some venison (game meat) from previous hunts, and a braai (BBQ) is sure to be included during the safari.

Buffalo Hunting Methods & Rifle Calibers

For those hunters bringing their firearms into South Africa, a SAPS 520 Import Form needs to be completed.

When hunting the dangerous game of the safari, a minimum of a .375 must be used. When it comes to Cape buffalo hunts, there is a saying that goes: “There is no such thing as too much firepower!” Ensure that your shot placement is spot on!

Cape Buffalo are usually hunted by tracking and stalking. Remain vigilant as this cunning bovine is known to double-back on the hunting party, making the hunter, the hunted!

Why go Hunting in South Africa?

    • South Africa is easily accessible from anywhere worldwide, with daily international flights landing at one of the three international airports.
    • South Africa has nine provinces, and each province offers some form of hunting. While some provinces, such as the Limpopo province, offer more variety, it is possible to hunt in each province.
    • Hunting takes place throughout the year in South Africa, although the peak season is the cooler months from around May to August.
    • South African hunts are seen as value for money when compared with other African destinations.
    • South African outfitters are seen as some of the best worldwide, with South African hospitality being legendary.
    • The area is renowned for its wide array of both African plains game and dangerous game hunting options.
    • It is the only destination worldwide, apart from Namibia, where all members of Africa’s Big 5 can be hunted (With this being said, no Leopard permits have been issued in quite some time).
    • South Africa, also referred to as the rainbow nation, offers great family getaways and holidays, allowing hunters to easily travel with family and other non-hunting parties.

Tips when Hunting Cape Buffalo in Limpopo

    • These beasts are seen as being cunning, stubborn, and unpredictable, and can become aggressive without warning should they feel threatened or if they are wounded.
    • When hunting Cape Buffalo, ensure that your shot placement is accurate before taking the shot. This tough, resilient bovine is extremely unforgiving of poor shot placement and will not hesitate to charge and defend itself, taking out anything or anyone that it sees as a threat. Added to that, the old saying goes that it takes one bullet to down a Buffalo, and another couple to convince it that it’s dead…and you have a good idea of the savage nature of the beast.
    • The Cape Buffalo is renowned for both its power and speed, reaching up to 35 miles per hour when charging. When you have close to 2,000 pounds of thundering Buffalo (together with its sharp horns!) bearing down on you, you have a serious problem if you are in its path!
    • Cape Buffalo possess a great sense of smell and hearing, and these, combined with their ability to camouflage themselves, make for a very challenging hunt.
