    Traveling for the Springbok Hunt

After arrival at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you must take a regional flight to Polokwane Airport in Limpopo. Dean and his team will meet you there, and after a short road transfer, hunters will arrive at the lodge and hunting grounds.

    ·        Limpopo is widely regarded as the best hunting ground in South Africa. For this Springbok Slam hunting safari, the hunting lodge is based in Messina, northern Limpopo

    ·        The hunting grounds are 12,000ha, teeming with African plains game, specialty game, and dangerous game

    ·        The vegetation in the area consists of Mopane bush, Acacia trees, and mixed bushveld

    ·        In terms of terrain, the area and surrounds are generally flat, with rocky outcrops and small hills, and the Sand River runs through the concession

    ·        This type of landscape and vegetation provides the hunter with a more challenging hunting experience, testing his skills and ability to adapt his hunting style on the move as he targets the Springbok

The Hunting Lodge in South Africa

The hunting lodge in Messina is a true home-away-from-home for hunters, offering the creature comforts of home along with various amenities, offering them a reprieve from the day’s hunting and a chance to refresh themselves and rest in the beautiful African wilderness.

Hunters will be accommodated in one of the 6 double chalets, which are well-equipped with soft, comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, and air conditioning. For those wanting to keep in touch with family and loved ones back home, WiFi and cell phone reception are available. The lodge also offers firepits, chill areas, and a swimming pool to enjoy after a day out hunting.

The resident chef prepares mouthwatering meal options for guests, served in a dining area overlooking the surrounding veld. Meals may include some venison (game meat) from previous hunts, and a braai (BBQ) is sure to be included during the safari.

Springbok Hunting Methods & Rifle Calibers

For those hunters bringing their firearms into South Africa, a SAPS 520 Import Form needs to be completed.

When Springbok hunting, it often includes shooting in open areas with long ranges, and a rifle with a flat trajectory is a good choice. While recommended calibers may include a .243 or a .270, larger caliber rifles such as a 30.06, .308, and 300-Win Mag will also ensure a quick and humane kill on the hunt.

Tips when Springbok Hunting in South Africa

    • Use a flat-shooting rifle caliber like .243 or .270 to ensure accurate, humane kills with minimal meat damage
    • The best time to consider Springbok hunting in Limpopo is during the winter months (May to August) when the vegetation is shorter and the animals are more likely to gather around waterholes
    • Work with experienced guides and PHs to ensure a better chance of a successful Springbok safari
    • Do your homework and ensure that your shot placement is spot on. For a Springbok antelope, aim one-third up the front shoulder from the broadside standing animal. This will ensure a quick and humane kill
    • Avoid head shots to actively preserve the trophy
    • Exceptional stalking skills are required – Springbok are extremely vigilant and wary, reaching speeds of over 50 miles per hour
    • Patience is key; do not rush this hunt as your trophy will disappear into the distance, never to be seen again!
    • Limpopo’s open plains and savannas are the perfect Springbok hunting grounds. Use the walk-and-stalk or spot-and-stalk methods to hunt this speedy antelope

Springbok hunting in Limpopo is a hunt not to miss! Book this exciting Springbok Slam now, and add some exceptional game to your trophy room!
