    The Springbok Slam

The focus of this hunting safari is completing the four-variant Springbok Slam. Hunters will pursue four distinct colour variations, each offering a different trophy and adding variety to the final collection. This springbok hunt is built around these four trophies, with additional plains game available should hunters wish to extend their safari.

Why Is Springbok Hunting So Popular?

Springbok are one of Africa’s most recognizable antelope and a favorite among plains game hunters. Their striking appearance, alert nature and speed make them an engaging species to pursue, while their ability to thrive across open and varied terrain creates a different hunting experience from many of Africa’s larger antelope.

For many hunters, the appeal goes beyond a single trophy. Springbok hunting involves careful glassing, patient stalking and precise shooting, particularly when animals are encountered across open country. The opportunity to pursue four distinct colour variants on one safari makes the Springbok Slam particularly appealing to hunters looking for something different from a conventional plains game hunt.

Why Hunt Plains Game in Limpopo?

Limpopo is a popular destination for plains game hunts, offering diverse bushveld habitat and a wide selection of African antelope. The province provides opportunities to combine a specialised hunt such as the Springbok Slam with additional species, making it well suited to hunters who want to build a varied safari around their primary trophies.

The region also offers established hunting operations and comfortable accommodation, making Limpopo a practical choice for hunters planning an African hunting safari.

    The Outfitter

Run by brothers Dean and Hano, JP Big Game Safaris offers professionally guided hunting safaris in South Africa and Mozambique. The outfitter operates hunts for plains game, specialty game and dangerous game across a range of hunting areas. Hunters can expect experienced Professional Hunters, well-organised camp services and comfortable accommodation throughout their safari.

    Additional Species

Hunters wishing to extend their safari can pursue additional plains game, subject to available quota and the outfitter’s current trophy list. Contact Game Hunting Safaris for the full and current list of available species and trophy fees at the time of booking.

    Traveling to the Hunting Grounds

International hunters traveling to go hunting in South Africa will typically arrive at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg before taking a regional flight to Polokwane Airport in Limpopo. The hunting team will meet hunters at Polokwane before transferring them to the lodge and hunting concession near Musina.

For hunters planning a South African hunting trip, Limpopo offers accessible hunting areas, established safari operations and a wide variety of plains game.

Springbok Hunting Methods & Rifle Calibers

Springbok hunting often involves longer shots across open country, making a flat-shooting rifle and accurate shooting important considerations. Calibres such as .243 and .270 are well suited to springbok, while larger calibres including .30-06, .308 and .300 Win Mag can also be used effectively with appropriate ammunition and shot placement.

A .308 rifle is available for rental at US$55 per day, with ammunition at US$65 per box. Hunters bringing their own firearms into South Africa will need to complete the required SAPS 520 firearm import documentation.

    Shot Placement on Medium Antelope

Springbok are relatively small-bodied antelope, so precise shot placement is important, particularly when hunting at longer distances. Hunters should wait for a clear broadside or suitable presentation and take a shot they are confident they can place accurately.

Your Professional Hunter will assist with shot selection and distance estimation throughout the hunt. Avoiding unnecessary head shots also helps protect the quality of the trophy.

    Completing Your Springbok Slam

The Springbok Slam offers a unique opportunity to pursue Common, Black, Copper and White Springbok during one professionally guided safari in Limpopo. With four springbok trophies included in the package, hunters can focus their safari on completing the Slam while still having the option to add further plains game.

If you would like further information about the hunt, want to add additional species or are considering bringing an observer, contact Game Hunting Safaris and our team can assist with the details and availability.
