The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is a hyena species native to North and East Africa, the Middle East, Caucasus, Central Asia and India. It is the most widespread hyena but not found in southern Africa and rarely seen on a game hunting safari anywhere!
A shy, solitary, nocturnal carnivore, the striped hyena lives in mountainous regions and scrub woodlands, making dens in rocky hills, caves, ravines, and crevices. Sometimes, they may also use dense vegetation as cover to sleep and rest in. In Africa, it came off second best to the spotted hyena in open areas, and moved to more arid, mountainous regions away from competition.
They are territorial animals and scent mark their boundaries as a warning to competitors. The hyena lives in small groups, scavenging only at night unless it is stormy, cloudy, or rainy. They forage alone, but a female may share her den and hunting ranges with her adult daughters when food is abundant.
Striped hyenas are typically not very vocal but will growl, screech, and subsequently roar if threatened. They have great big manes that they raise if threatened or upset, causing them to appear much larger to scare off predators.
The striped hyena is primarily a scavenger and feasts on a diet of scavenged medium and large-sized animals such as wildebeests, gazelles, zebras, and impalas. They will also hunt and kill smaller animals, including rodents, reptiles, birds, and rabbits or hares. Their jaws are so strong that they will even chew the bones of a carcass!
Natural predators for hyenas include lions, tigers, spotted hyenas and leopards. They have been known to attack and kill humans, especially children, prey on livestock on farms and are targeted by man for game hunting and hyena hunting in Africa. Hunting of these animals not only eradicates them from the farmlands but also keeps local communities safe from becoming prey.

Striped Hyena are Best hunted through opportunistic, baiting and spotlight methods.
When hyena hunting in Africa, look for an animal with a broad head, dark eyes, a thick muzzle, and large, pointed ears. They are smaller than both the spotted and brown hyenas. Their ears, throats, and muzzles are black, while their coat is brown, a yellowish-gold or grey with black stripes on the legs and body.
As a nocturnal scavenger, the striped hyena may be an opportunistic hunt while sitting in a blind waiting for another larger trophy to appear. Another opportunity to hunt hyenas in Africa would be when you happen upon them feasting on a dead animal while on your hunting safari, or keep a lookout for circling vultures signalling a kill, as hyenas won’t be far away. Some African countries allow hunting via spotlights since the striped hyena is nocturnal. Different regulations come into play concerning hunting hyenas in Africa, with each African country having its own rules and regulations. Confirm the regulations with your hunting outfitter, as hunting striped hyenas in some African countries requires a special permit. Many techniques are implemented for hunting striped hyenas in Africa. Spotting with optics; tracking to the den, and stalking can result in success. During the day, scan for vultures in the sky; where there are flying scavengers, the hyena will be in close proximity. Alternatively use bait and build a blind as if you were hunting a cat. In countries where it’s legal, hunting striped hyenas at night using spotlights can be very successful with this nocturnal animal.
There is only one golden rule when hunting hyenas in Africa: Go big or go home! Harvest the largest hyena you see, as it will look good amongst your game hunting trophy collection!
The best caliber rifle for hunting spotted hyena is the same rifle you packed for your plains game hunt. The minimum caliber should be the likes of a 7mm with a high-quality bullet weighing 150 grains fitted with a good tactical scope. In the 30 caliber rifles, a .308 or 30.06 is also an excellent choice. If you are using a .375, it will work just as well.
